Dr. David Nussbaum, Ph.D., C. Psych.
Assistant Professor, University of Toronto Scarborough (retired)
ISGAP Senior Research Fellow
When: Thursday, January 19, 2023 | 14:10-15:10
Where: You may join the event online (Zoom) here
The event is free and open to the public.
About the lecture
Throughout Jewish history, irrational, intense and disproportionate hatred of the Jewish People and its violent aftermath have presented existential threats to Jewish communities around the world. Contemporary antisemitism focuses primarily, but not exclusively, on fabricated allegations intending to demonize and delegitimize the Jewish State and by extension, vilify Jews and others anywhere who support Israel’s existence. Commensurate with the continuity and magnitude of this extreme prejudice and behavior, there is an extensive literature on the history and historical analyses of the phenomenon, but a relative lack of rigorous attempts to understand underlying psychological dimensions of the groups and individuals who actualize antisemitism. Specifically, existing treatments do not provide concurrent analyses of different types of antisemitism, and do not address how individuals occupying different positions within antisemitic group hierarchies differ with respect to cognitive, emotional, motivational, and perceptual modalities in general and their interactive relationships to antisemitism.
This talk will briefly outline different types of human information processing, hierarchical organizational structures, and aggression types. These building blocks will be used to identify and differentiate distinct types of antisemitism, the psychology of individuals occupying different positions in antisemitic hierarchies from the complex (e.g., national) to the simple (e.g., lone wolves), and suggest strategies for effectively countering the multifaceted array of antisemitic organizations and individuals aligned against the Jewish People by effective messaging and activities. Proposed empirical studies to validate and refine these ideas will be described.
Bio of the Speaker
Dr. David Nussbaum, Ph. D., C. Psych.
Assistant Professor, University of Toronto Scarborough (retired); ISGAP Senior Research Fellow
Prof. Nussbaum was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) between 2005 and 2013. Prior to his position at UTSC, he was an Adjunct Professor at York University from 1984 to 2004. More recently from 2011 through 2020, Prof. Nussbaum held a series of renewed Guest (Visiting) Professorships at the China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing, China. Originally setting out to be a clinical psychologist, he instead followed a radically different approach to understanding behavior that was afforded by a third-year undergraduate course entitled “Molecular Psychobiology”. Following graduate school, he retrained as a clinician and worked within forensic settings doing both clinical work and research. Prof. Nussbaum was continuously struck by the absence of behavioral neuroscience in the forensic area and conducted both his clinical practice and empirical research within a behavioral neuroscience framework. An elected Fellow of both the Canadian (CPA) and American Psychological Associations, he was awarded Professor of the Year (Psychology) at UTSC in 2011. He served as Chair of the CPA Sections on Criminal Justice (7 years), Psychopharmacology (23 years), and Extremism and Terrorism (6 years.) Prof. Nussbaum has also served as a Psychology Member of the Ontario Review Board since 1997. He has lectured internationally including Belgium, China, Finland, Germany, Japan, Israel, Kenya, Sweden, and the United States. His research interests span Behavioral Neuroscience, Epistemology of Psychology, Violent Risk Prediction and Extremism & Terrorism. He has published 45 peer reviewed papers, and delivered over 125 peer-reviewed talks at professional and scientific meetings and conferences.

About the event
Melancholy seems to blossom everywhere these days: in literature and music, in politics and civic life, and in many scholarly fields such as political theory, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, art history, cultural studies, queer studies, literary studies, and post-colonial studies. Some projects embrace it while others warn against it. Attitudes to melancholy vary: is it personal or collective? Romantic or post-modern? Cultural or psychological? Gendered or racial? Paralyzing or enabling? A basic element most attitudes share is the pursuit of an elusive freedom that no rebellion against authority can attain. This lecture will survey the melancholic pursuit of freedom in our disorienting century, explore what makes it so powerful and seemingly futile, and relate it to contemporary Greek poetry.
The event is free and open to the public.

Lecture by: Christine Philliou
Professor of History and Director of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies and Modern Greek Studies Programs at UC Berkeley
When: November 3, 2022 | 19:30
Where: ACG Events Hall, The American College of Greece
About the event
In this centennial year since the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the destruction of Smyrna, we mourn and commemorate the loss of Hellenism in Asia Minor, and increasingly, the tortuous experiences of Asia Minor Greeks who had lived in peace but suffered death, exile, deportation, and traumatic uprooting that accompanied the defeat of the Greek national army.
This year’s Venizelos Chair holder, Christine Philliou, will make the case that instead of one master story, encased in the larger drama of the Greek nation-state, we can better understand these events and the legacy they still have in our lives by considering other, related “stories,” or narratives, that are linked to but at the same time not contained within that master narrative. Dr. Philiou will demonstrate this with a few case studies taken from contemporary sources, including the episodes in the story of Pierce College, and taking us to Berlin, the US, and back to Western Macedonia. There were many threads, and many meanings of the tragic events of 1922. Dr. Philliou hopes to show how we can broaden our understanding by thinking historically and turning our attention ever so slightly in other directions.

About the speaker
Christine Philliou (Fulbright ’00-’01), Professor of History and Director of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies and Modern Greek Studies Programs at UC Berkeley, specializes in the political, social, and cultural history of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey and Greece as parts of the post-Ottoman world.
Her first book, Biography of an Empire: Governing Ottomans in an Age of Revolution (University of California Press, 2011; Greek edition Alexandria Press, 2021; Turkish edition İş Bankası Kültür Press, 2022), examined the changes in Ottoman governance leading up to the Tanzimat reforms of the mid-nineteenth century. It did so using the vantage point of Phanariots, an Orthodox Christian elite that was intimately involved in the day-to-day work of governance even though structurally excluded from belonging to the Ottoman state. Her second book Turkey: A Past Against History (University of California Press, 2021; Greek edition Alexandria Press, 2022), focuses on the fraught history of the idea of opposition/dissent, connecting literature, politics and the construction of official History in the Ottoman Second Constitutional and Republican period of Turkish history. In it, she highlights the political, personal and intellectual/artistic itinerary of the Ottoman/Turkish writer and perennial dissident Refik Halid Karay (1888-1965). The premise is that, in the absence of a sustained opposition party between 1908 and 1950, there developed a more abstract space of opposition and dissent, half in the imagination and half in political reality, in Ottoman, and then after 1923 Republican Turkish intellectual life. She uses Refik Halid Karay, and the concept of muhalefet in Turkish, to explore the changing nature and contours of that space through the supposed rupture that separated the Ottoman Empire from Modern Turkey. She has recently established, with the support of the Modern Greek Studies Foundation, the Nikos Kazantzakis Visiting Scholar Program at UC Berkeley.

About the book
On Saturday, September 9, 1922, the victorious Turkish cavalry rode into Smyrna, the richest and most cosmopolitan city in the Ottoman Empire. There was widespread fear in the city that the victorious Turkish army would lash out with vehement ferocity at the inhabitants of Smyrna.
But the reality refuted even the most ominous prediction. What happened over the next two weeks must rank as one of the most compelling human dramas of the twentieth century — the drama of uprooting thousands of refugees whose blood flows in the veins of many Greek families today. Almost two million people were embroiled in a disaster of truly epic proportions.
Paradise Lost is a powerful story of disaster, heroism and survival, told in the narrative verve that has made Giles Milton a bestselling journalist and writer. It unfolds through the memories of the survivors, many interviewed for the first time, and the eyewitness accounts of those who found themselves caught up in one of the greatest catastrophes of the modern age.
Bio of the Author
Giles Milton was born in Buckinghamshire, UK, in 1966 and was educated at Latymer Upper School and the University of Bristol. He is an internationally best-selling author specializing in narrative history who takes an event from the past and makes it come alive. Milton’s works of narrative history rely on personal testimonies, diaries, journals, and letters to make sense of key historical moments recounted through the eyes of those who were there. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages.
Russian Roulette (Minoas, 2014) recounts the secret service’s early days and British spies’ attempt to thwart Lenin’s revolution. In Churchill’s Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (Minoas, 2017), the author narrates the story of a top-secret organization founded in London whose purpose is to plot the destruction of Hitler’s war machine through spectacular acts. D-Day (Minoas, 2019) recounts the events that led to the largest military landing in World War II. “Checkmate in Berlin” (Minoas, 2021) is an immersive story of the race to seize Berlin in the aftermath of World War II. Minoas publications also publish the following Milton works: The Perfect Corpse (book, 2017), “Wolfram: The Boy Who Went to War” (story, 2011), and Edward Trencom’s Nose (novel, 2008).

About the event
What does education – formal and informal – have to offer with regard to sustainability? How do the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) bridge academia and business in pursuit of a common future? What new skills are needed in the new sustainability landscape as it is taking shape? What do policies on a corporate and state level reflect regarding our progress so far in terms of sustainable development?
This CSR event will bring together representatives of the Greek state, expert professionals from the corporate world, and distinguished academics from both public and private universities for a high-level exchange of ideas based on their shared faith in the value of “Education for Sustainability.”
This event will also be an opportunity to celebrate CSR HELLAS’ major educational initiatives, that is:
- The CSR School, the Executive Education Program on Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility, offers advanced theoretical and practical training on the major thematic areas surrounding CSR today. The training program will be officially “kicked-off” at this event, as it begins just over 10 days later on 30 September, for its 4th implementation (Registrations are still open).
- The “Nikos Analytis” Student Contest on CSR, which brings together teams of students to study, analyze, argue and come up with concrete proposals regarding one or more of the SDGs. The topic of this year was “The Social Impact of Climate Change”, and the event will signal the completion of this 7th cycle of the contest with the award ceremony for the 3 highest-scoring teams.

‘You cannot see me from where I look at myself’
Francesca Woodman
Named after André Breton’s novel, Athanasia Kanellopoulou’s ‘Nadja – Who am I?’ is a choreographic reverie on the work of American photographer Francesca Woodman. Inspired by Woodman’s fascinating photographs, the piece focuses on the female gaze, the vulnerability of female existence. It seeks to raise questions and concerns about female nature. Four powerful performers meet on stage and take us, each with her special movement quality and choreographic vocabulary, into a world where the body is exposed to the passing of time, pain, expectations, the views of others, but also to its own obsessions, desires, and inner struggles. Each performer follows her own unique trajectory, while all four of them coexist and communicate through female sensitivity, sensuality, strength, and their awareness of aging. As their bodies disappear inside mirrors, turn upside down, become fragmented they find their totality, their earthly dimension, their true and essential self.
Concept & choreography: Athanasia Kanellopoulou
Performers: Lia Chamilothori, Matina Kostiani, Vassiana Skopetea, Maria Fountouli
Assistant choreographer: Vassiana Skopetea
Music: Konstantina Polychronopoulou

a lecture by:
Dr. Ana S. González Rueda
Associate Lecturer at the School of Art History, University of St Andrews (Scotland)
Abstract of the presentation
This lecture addresses three key episodes in Mexican art during the nineteenth century, a largely overlooked period. As it developed a sense of identity following independence (1821), the country faced a politically turbulent time marked by foreign aggression and dictatorship. This talk explores the visual arts’ crucial role in this process.
Dr. Gonzales Rueda will concentrate on Manuel Tolsá’s equestrian bronze statue of Charles IV, known as el caballito (the little horse) and its resitting at different locations in Mexico City. She will discuss how the history of this monument correlates with the modernization of the capital. The following section examines the first exhibition of viceregal painting (1857) –the basis of the first volume on Mexican art history– and the establishment of the old and the modern schools of painting. The third and final section focuses on landscape conventions and the picturesque towards the end of the century. As a guiding thread connecting these three moments, she borrows Elizabeth Wilder Weismann’s description of new Latin American countries being ‘more colonial than the colony’. Her analysis also draws from Rolando Vazquez’s conception of how coloniality determines how we know, understand, and experience the world. In this case, she reflects on how it aesthetically installs the colonial difference.
Bio of the speaker
Ana S. González Rueda is an Associate Lecturer at the School of Art History, University of St Andrews (Scotland). She obtained her PhD in Museum and Gallery Studies with a thesis entitled “Inherent Pedagogies: Critical Approaches to Exhibition Making in the 2000s” (University of St Andrews, 2019). She also holds an MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the University of Essex (2012) and a BA in Art History from Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City (2008). In 2020, Ana completed a postdoctoral research residency at the Decolonising Arts Institute, UAL. Other projects include “Meaningful Matter: Testing Feminist Pedagogies in the Exhibition space” for the Van Abbemuseum’s Deviant Practice platform (2018-2019), and coordinating Possessing Nature, the Mexican Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2015). Ana worked as a research assistant for the EU-LAC MUSEUMS and the Community Crafts and Cultures projects at St Andrews and is working on a forthcoming edited volume on communities and museums in the 21st century.

About the event
There seems to be no end to the controversies over the European past. From the polemics surrounding the legacies of Nazism and the Holocaust, to the ongoing struggle over Europe’s colonial history, and the impact of the end of the Cold War on international relations, European historians today are faced with a proliferation of civic and political debates that draw on the “lessons” of history.
But how should European historians respond to these public invocations of history? To what extent do we have a responsibility to contribute to debate? How should we react to the manipulation or politicisation of our work? By bringing together historians of different countries, regions and subfields within European history, our aim is to start a conversation about the place of the historian in today’s fractured political landscape.

On May 24, the students will present their work and will discuss the findings with shipowners and maritime executives. This project aims at bringing students to the forefront of global developments and in direct liaison with the maritime community, with the common goal to enhance marine environment protection through sustainable development. As a responsible academic institution educating the “leaders of tomorrow”, The American College of Greece is very interested in further enhancing the public dialogue and awareness on a topic of both local and global concern.
The conference will be free and open to the public and aims to be an action-oriented event. Parallel activities will include a digital display of posters prepared by Deree students in thematic areas presented at the conference.

About the event
Weaving Worlds is an exhibition about processes of world-building or re-worlding as depicted, discussed or enhanced through art. The experience of the pandemic allowed us to reflect upon what is lost in a condition of continuous acceleration, and what is yet to be gained in order to find ways of living with each other in a period of a generalized crisis. Weaving Worlds addresses the need to reimagine forms of co-existence on an environmental, social or political level. It questions the idea of a one-world world acknowledging the existence and interdependence of different realities, needs and possibilities.

Bio of the Speaker
Dr. James Nemiroff, Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish, Kalamazoo College
James Nemiroff is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish at Kalamazoo College. He earned his Ph.D from the University of Chicago in Romance Languages and Literatures as well as Masters degrees from the University of Chicago and the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid Spain. His scholarship analyzes the representation of Judaism in 16th and 17th century Spanish literature. More specifically, his research investigates to what degree Jewish religious identities are categories of performance that helped not only shape Early Modern Spanish drama but also shaped historiographical debates about the relationships between Jews and Christians that persist today. Based off of his dissertation, which explores to what degree characters Judaize or perform Judaism on stage in certain Spanish dramas, he is working on a book entitled Lope’s Forgeries: Lope’s Toledan Comedias as Early Modern Fake News. He has also published essays in such journals as E-humanista and in collections edited through Iberoamericana and the University of Chicago Press.
As a teacher-scholar, he has taught courses on Early Modern and Contemporary Spanish literature and film. Dr. Nemiroff incorporates educational technologies to teach his research interests to undergraduate students. For example, in a course exploring how certain Anti-Judaic and Islamophobic tropes date back to Early Modern Spain, students created augmented reality posters that taught them to recognize and productively fight against the Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia they encounter each day on their social media feeds.

Abstract of the presentation
In 1920 Marcel Duchamp moved to the invention of a female alter ego named Rrose Sélavy. Rrose Sélavy would make her first appearances in a series of photographs by Man Ray in 1921. Incarnated by Duchamp in drag, these now iconic photographs have often overshadowed Rrose Sélavy’s role in Duchamp’s life and work. Yet, there is a significance to Sélavy beyond her existence as mere photographic image: her less acknowledged dimension as a creative subject. In fact, already from the early 1920s, Sélavy emerges as the creator of a variety of Duchamp’s artworks, becoming eventually a persistent authorial figure throughout the artist’s career. Examining her presence in Duchamp’s oeuvre as well as her encounters with the artist’s Dadaist and Surrealist peers, this lecture will explore Sélavy’s position within Duchamp’s creative process, his strategies of authorship, and how her invention relates to cultural connotations of masculinity and femininity in the modern era.

About the event
Ποιοι είναι οι στόχοι, οι μέθοδοι, τα χαρακτηριστικά και η θεματολογία της Αγωγής Υγείας; Πώς μπορεί η Αγωγή Υγείας να καταστεί μέσο γνώσεων, αξιών και δεξιοτήτων για το παιδί και τον έφηβο; Πώς μπορεί να καθιερωθεί το πρόγραμμα Αγωγής Υγείας σε όλα τα σχολεία της χώρας, με τη συνεργασία των υπουργείων και της τοπικής αυτοδιοίκησης; Σε ποιο στάδιο βρισκόμαστε, ποιες ενέργειες έχουν γίνει και ποια η συνδρομή του Ινστιτούτου Εκπαιδευτικής Πολιτικής ως προς την εφαρμογή της Αγωγής Υγείας στο εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα της χώρας;

A lecture by Dr George Manginis
Academic director of the Benaki Museum
When: Thursday, March 31 | 14:10 – 15:20
Where: 6th Level Auditorium
Organized by: the Art History Society
About the event
A beautifully painted yet somewhat saccharine portrait of young Queen Olga of Greece has been hanging for over seventy years at the Benaki Museum. It was donated by Mary Karolou, daughter-in-law of the Queen’s private secretary and biographer Julia Karolou. Heretofore, the artist’s signature on the portrait had remained undeciphered. Thanks to the portrait’s inclusion in a recent exhibition, an attribution was made possible. This lecture will introduce the exciting life of the artist who painted the rosy-cheeked Queen and will weave together the lives of four women between the 1870s and the 1950s.

Body Positive – Vibrant at Every Size is an awareness campaign intended for individuals of all gender identities, races, ethnicities, ages and sizes. It is not limited to disordered eating and preoccupation with body shape, instead addresses unintentional bias as well as outright discrimination and stigmatization related with body shape. The campaign also offers the opportunity for the ACG Community to learn that the pursuit of health is not limited to weight loss or gain or achieving a certain body size or shape. Our message: We are diverse and wonderfully beautiful the way we are; “One size does not fit all”.

About the event
Although the Eastern Roman Empire, better known as Byzantium, may be relatively neglected or even ignored in many western academic curricula—especially in comparison to its more illustrious predecessor—its legacy lives on and still influences many aspects of everyday life in the modern world. This lecture will explore the multi-faceted survival of Byzantine heritage today, and will assess its impact on various contemporary notions and practices. It will also focus on the significance and management of Byzantine monuments, both in Greece and abroad. Lively debate to follow!
