Students at both the graduate and undergraduate level will examine topics, such as the moral implications of robotics, the use of algorithms in human resource analytics and how this affects our privacy, how certain philosophical theories from antiquity to the present day can assist our understanding of artificial intelligence, the impact of technology on communication, and the consequences of technological advancement on human affairs, to name a few. Both the student presentations and the discussion to follow will raise awareness of fundamental questions and concerns as derived from the use of technology today, and they will attempt possible solutions or suggestions for a constructive symbiosis of human and artificial intelligence in the 21st century.

Bio of the Speaker
Dr. James Nemiroff, Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish, Kalamazoo College
James Nemiroff is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish at Kalamazoo College. He earned his Ph.D from the University of Chicago in Romance Languages and Literatures as well as Masters degrees from the University of Chicago and the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid Spain. His scholarship analyzes the representation of Judaism in 16th and 17th century Spanish literature. More specifically, his research investigates to what degree Jewish religious identities are categories of performance that helped not only shape Early Modern Spanish drama but also shaped historiographical debates about the relationships between Jews and Christians that persist today. Based off of his dissertation, which explores to what degree characters Judaize or perform Judaism on stage in certain Spanish dramas, he is working on a book entitled Lope’s Forgeries: Lope’s Toledan Comedias as Early Modern Fake News. He has also published essays in such journals as E-humanista and in collections edited through Iberoamericana and the University of Chicago Press.
As a teacher-scholar, he has taught courses on Early Modern and Contemporary Spanish literature and film. Dr. Nemiroff incorporates educational technologies to teach his research interests to undergraduate students. For example, in a course exploring how certain Anti-Judaic and Islamophobic tropes date back to Early Modern Spain, students created augmented reality posters that taught them to recognize and productively fight against the Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia they encounter each day on their social media feeds.

Abstract of the presentation
In 1920 Marcel Duchamp moved to the invention of a female alter ego named Rrose Sélavy. Rrose Sélavy would make her first appearances in a series of photographs by Man Ray in 1921. Incarnated by Duchamp in drag, these now iconic photographs have often overshadowed Rrose Sélavy’s role in Duchamp’s life and work. Yet, there is a significance to Sélavy beyond her existence as mere photographic image: her less acknowledged dimension as a creative subject. In fact, already from the early 1920s, Sélavy emerges as the creator of a variety of Duchamp’s artworks, becoming eventually a persistent authorial figure throughout the artist’s career. Examining her presence in Duchamp’s oeuvre as well as her encounters with the artist’s Dadaist and Surrealist peers, this lecture will explore Sélavy’s position within Duchamp’s creative process, his strategies of authorship, and how her invention relates to cultural connotations of masculinity and femininity in the modern era.

About the event
Ποιοι είναι οι στόχοι, οι μέθοδοι, τα χαρακτηριστικά και η θεματολογία της Αγωγής Υγείας; Πώς μπορεί η Αγωγή Υγείας να καταστεί μέσο γνώσεων, αξιών και δεξιοτήτων για το παιδί και τον έφηβο; Πώς μπορεί να καθιερωθεί το πρόγραμμα Αγωγής Υγείας σε όλα τα σχολεία της χώρας, με τη συνεργασία των υπουργείων και της τοπικής αυτοδιοίκησης; Σε ποιο στάδιο βρισκόμαστε, ποιες ενέργειες έχουν γίνει και ποια η συνδρομή του Ινστιτούτου Εκπαιδευτικής Πολιτικής ως προς την εφαρμογή της Αγωγής Υγείας στο εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα της χώρας;

Academic director of the Benaki Museum
When: Thursday, March 31 | 14:10 – 15:20
Where: 6th Level Auditorium
Organized by: the Art History Society
About the event
A beautifully painted yet somewhat saccharine portrait of young Queen Olga of Greece has been hanging for over seventy years at the Benaki Museum. It was donated by Mary Karolou, daughter-in-law of the Queen’s private secretary and biographer Julia Karolou. Heretofore, the artist’s signature on the portrait had remained undeciphered. Thanks to the portrait’s inclusion in a recent exhibition, an attribution was made possible. This lecture will introduce the exciting life of the artist who painted the rosy-cheeked Queen and will weave together the lives of four women between the 1870s and the 1950s.

Body Positive – Vibrant at Every Size is an awareness campaign intended for individuals of all gender identities, races, ethnicities, ages and sizes. It is not limited to disordered eating and preoccupation with body shape, instead addresses unintentional bias as well as outright discrimination and stigmatization related with body shape. The campaign also offers the opportunity for the ACG Community to learn that the pursuit of health is not limited to weight loss or gain or achieving a certain body size or shape. Our message: We are diverse and wonderfully beautiful the way we are; “One size does not fit all”.

The Return Beat – Interfacing with Our Interface
When: Friday 25, Saturday 26 & Sunday 27, February
Where: The American College of Greece, Black Box Theatre (and online)
Organized by:
The Makings of the Actor, Athens, Dr Olu Taiwo, Senior Lecturer, Department in Performing Arts, University of Winchester and the Labanarium, London.
The Conference is hosted by:
The Theatre Arts and Dance Department of The Frances Rich School of Fine and Performing Arts-The American College of Greece, with the support of Dr Kiki Selioni, Post-doctoral Researcher, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London.
About the event
This conference is part of a series of international events under the auspices of The Makings of the Actor Project. The mission of The Makings of the Actor is to gather international practitioners and researchers from diverse fields of performance practice and scholarship, to develop and disseminate, through conferences and workshops, an evolving performance pedagogy that addresses the needs of present and future actors. The Makings of the Actor Project is organizing a series of conferences based on books from international research practitioners discussing in theory and presenting in practice their works.
In his book ‘The Return Beat- Interfacing with Our Interface, A Spiritual Approach to the Golden Triangle’, Dr. Olu Taiwo coined the term Return Beat referring to a metaphysical experience of West African Rhythm from a performer-centered approach. This approach draws attention to modes of rhythmic perceptions that highlight certain shared resonant experiences in a group that are cyclical in nature. The Golden triangle refers to the use of rhythm through: Song/spoken word, dance/movement, percussion/drumming. It postulates that performances produced with this awareness means that the performer will have to be rhythmically intuitive and display a high degree of self-coordinating intelligence.
Taking The Return Beat – Interfacing with Our Interface as both a framework and provocation, this conference will delve into its various themes and practices, offering a platform for practitioners and scholars to share and reflect on their perspectives on, and insights into, rhythm within acting and performance. Through presentations, work demonstrations and discussions, we will explore common themes and differing understandings and approaches to rhythm in this field.
The event will be held as a Blended (Hybrid) Conference. In recognition of both the global reach of this theme and the expansive network of interested practitioners and scholars, as well as the impact of the current pandemic, participants are invited to take part either in person or virtually. Conference proceedings will be live-streamed; papers, and, where appropriate, workshops and demonstrations, can be presented remotely.
Paper Presentations, Teaching Demonstrations and Workshops will take place at two venues:

Bio of the Speaker
Prof. David Nussbaum, Ph. D., C. Psych.
Assistant Professor, University of Toronto Scarborough (retired); ISGAP Senior Research Fellow
Prof. Nussbaum was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) between 2005 and 2013. Prior to his position at UTSC, he was an Adjunct Professor at York University from 1984 to 2004. More recently from 2011 through 2020, Prof. Nussbaum held a series of renewed Guest (Visiting) Professorships at the China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing, China. Originally setting out to be a clinical psychologist, he instead followed a radically different approach to understanding behavior that was afforded by a third-year undergraduate course entitled “Molecular Psychobiology”. Following graduate school, he retrained as a clinician and worked within forensic settings doing both clinical work and research. Prof. Nussbaum was continuously struck by the absence of behavioral neuroscience in the forensic area and conducted both his clinical practice and empirical research within a behavioral neuroscience framework. An elected Fellow of both the Canadian (CPA) and American Psychological Associations, he was awarded Professor of the Year (Psychology) at UTSC in 2011. He served as Chair of the CPA Sections on Criminal Justice (7 years), Psychopharmacology (23 years), and Extremism and Terrorism (6 years.) Prof. Nussbaum has also served as a Psychology Member of the Ontario Review Board since 1997. He has lectured internationally including Belgium, China, Finland, Germany, Japan, Israel, Kenya, Sweden, and the United States. His research interests span Behavioral Neuroscience, Epistemology of Psychology, Violent Risk Prediction and Extremism & Terrorism. He has published 45 peer reviewed papers, and delivered over 125 peer reviewed talks at professional and scientific meetings and conferences.

Center of Excellence in Food, Tourism & Leisure, The American College of Greece
About the event

About the event
The ACG 150 strategic plan created a group of Institutes, Centers of Excellence and the Research, Technology & Innovation Network.
Jay Samons, Senior Vice President & Chief Academic Officer, Executive Director, Institute for Hellenic Culture and the Liberal Arts invites ACG students, faculty and staff to an online presentation and discussion about the ACG 150 strategic plan, introduces the unit leaders and shares current and future initiatives.
As SVP Samons states: “Many ACG faculty are already contributing to these units as Members or Fellows, but I am very keen to see even more faculty as well as students, involved in these efforts. ACG150 has been designed to bring academia together with the public and private sectors in order to have a positive impact on the Greek economy and society. The ACG 150 units provide additional ways for our faculty and students to enrich their academic experience, while strengthening ACG’s role, based on our motto “to serve, not to be served.”
Looking forward to welcoming you to this informative, interactive session!

About the event
Psychology lost its soul in the 1930s.
The concept of “soul” is not needed to either understand or modify behavior. Our brain is the riverbed that holds and channels our stream of consciousness (Koch, 2012). It is molded by family and culture. Experience sculpts our character from the genetic material we are granted as Phidias sculpted Apollo from a block of Parian marble. Alzheimer’s disease will pay an unwelcome visit to many of us at end of life. It will disrupt the internal structure of our neurons and we will be living evidence the mind is the product of the brain and has no influence on it. Which one of us would not like to discard our depression, anxieties, obsessions, compulsions, our unrequited love? It seems the puppet is free only in as much as it loves its strings (Harris, 2012).
Professor Paxinos will speak on the neuroscience behind A River Divided, a novel in the environmental genre that broke a record in the time it took him to complete–21 years. He will speak of the neuroscience principles on the formation of heroes of the novel, giving a historical account of the origin of ideas of the mind, the soul, free will and consciousness.
Required for entrance: ID card and a valid Certificate of Covid-19 Vaccination or valid Covid-19 Disease Certificate, as per the latest public health regulations.

George Paxinos studied at Berkeley, McGill and Yale. He has discovered more brain regions than anyone in history and has published 58 books––his first, The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, has been the third most cited scientific book of all time, and his Atlas of the Human Brain has received awards from the Association of American Publishers and the British Medical Association.
Prof. Paxinos was included in the 63-scientists identified in the study “1821-2021 – Greek Pioneers in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences,” by ARISTEiA and ACG.
After a 21-year effort, Prof. Paxinos wrote a novel A River Divided: Orwellian in its encapsulation of the quintessential moral and social dilemmas of the 21st century, A River Divided shows Paxinos to be a storyteller. Cloned ancient genes skip two thousand years to produce identical twins who are raised apart, unaware of the other’s existence, but destined to clash in an almighty battle for the Amazon.
A River Divided can be obtained as an ebook or hard copy from (if you are outside of Australia and wish a hard copy, use the bookdepository site) Booktopia.com.au, or Amazon.com.au

The City of Sparta, the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies and the Institute for Hellenic Culture and the Liberal Arts of the American College of Greece, in commemoration of the 2500-year anniversary of the end of the Persian Wars.
About the lecture
Seen through the lens of the famous Peloponnesian War, Sparta and Athens are sometimes treated as inveterate enemies, representing not only different Greek dialects, but also disparate political systems and approaches to life in general. Yet Sparta and Athens in fact enjoyed a complicated relationship that stretched over centuries and produced alliance as often as hostility. Seen in this larger context, rather than as a prelude to the frequent strife that followed in the later fifth century, Herodotos’ account of the battle of Plataia takes on a different complexion. Exactly 2,500 years after the battle, we may now be in a better position to assess the account than were Herodotos’ own readers.

Speaker’s bio
Dr. Tatiana Papageorgiou is a concert pianist, musicologist, arranger and educator with diverse professional activity. She holds both academic and performance degrees in music from the Athens Conservatoire, the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music and Birmingham City University, culminating in a PhD in Music which focused on Greek music. Her doctoral thesis addresses the question of Hellenicity and Internationalism in the classical music of Mikis Theodorakis, shedding light for the first time on his groundbreaking theory of ‘tetrachords’. Her close collaboration as pianist and researcher with Mikis Theodorakis for over twenty years, has resulted in the unearthing of unpublished, unknown works and their first performances, including Theodorakis’s Second Piano Concerto Helikon, and several of his piano works. As a piano soloist she has performed with orchestras around the world, including the London Philharmonic, the Moscow New Opera Symphony, the Beijing Symphony, the Kiev Opera Symphony, the Leipzig Chamber Orchestra, the Sofia Amadeus Orchestra, and all the major Greek orchestras including the Athens and Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestras, the ERT National Symphony and the Camerata-Friends of Music Orchestra. She has performed extensively in prestigious concert halls around the world, in Europe, North and South America, Israel, Turkey, China and Australia. Her concert appearances, some together with Theodorakis on the podium, and her complete recordings of Theodorakis’s music, have been acclaimed by audiences and critics, rendering her as a leading interpreter of his symphonic music. Among her published works are the arrangements of forty Songs for Piano by the leading German music publisher Schott. Her doctoral thesis is currently in the process of being published in Greek. Tatiana Papageorgiou has been a full-time member of the Deree music faculty at the American College of Greece for over twenty years, teaching music theory, piano performance, film scoring and Greek music.

About the event
Serving as the kick-off event to the campus-wide “ACG Food Waste Campaign: Reduce your FOODprint!”, this interactive discussion aims at raising awareness about the importance of reducing food waste and food loss at all stages of the supply chain (farmers, farmers’ markets, restaurants and catering, end consumer, etc.).
Parallel to the discussion, student volunteers from the ACG Sustainability Leaders, the ACG SDG Student Hub, and the Deree Environmental Studies Society will play homemade videos with tips on how to reduce food waste while cooking at home!
The event is organized by the Office of Public Affairs at The American College of Greece, Boroume – the pioneer NGO in the field of reducing food waste in Greece – and Deipnosofistirion Catering, and supported by the Center of Excellence in Sustainability at The American College of Greece.
This is a certified sustainable event.
ACG Food Waste Campaign: Reduce your FOODprint!
Did you know that 1/3 of all food globally goes to waste? Wasting food also means wasting the water used to produce the food and the land on which the food has been produced (28% of the world’s agricultural land), while 9.9% of the human population is undernourished. Due to food wastage billions of tons of CO2 emissions are released into Earth’s atmosphere, contributing greatly to climate change. (fao.org)
According to UN’s Food Waste Index Report 2021, Greek people waste on average 142 kg of food annually, one of the highest in the world.
ACG is dedicated to reducing food waste both on campus and in the broader community. Since November 2018, the College has been collaborating with the NGO Boroume. In the context of our collaboration, we have adopted a farmers’ market – the ACG Farmers’ Market – where students, staff, and faculty volunteer on a weekly basis and save food that would otherwise end up in the landfill. From November 2018 until now, our volunteers have saved over seven tons of food by offering 522 hours of community service!
As of October 2020, ACG is a member of the Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste, a group of public authorities, well-known companies, food and service businesses from all areas of the supply chain, social impact organizations, and academic and research institutions, coming together to prevent and reduce food waste in Greece, aiming at raising awareness, educating the public, highlighting and disseminating best practices, exchanging knowledge and ideas, promoting research and innovation, promoting and donating any surplus food to social impact organizations, and, most importantly, advocating for public policy on preventing and reducing food waste and food loss in Greece.
This academic year, in tandem with the EU Directive 2018/851 and subsequent national law, we are taking it one step further by launching a campus-wide campaign on reducing and preventing food waste!
“The ACG Food Waste Campaign: Reduce your FOODprint!” aims at raising awareness about this critical issue and educating our community on best practices on how to save food.

Dimitris Skarmoutsos
Executive chef
Globe-trotter and communicative, classic but modern, visionary and innovator, Dimitris Skarmoutsos is the chef who manages well in both Mediterranean and French cuisines, but also in sushi and street food. In every type of meal or cuisine, the starting point of his work is to create tasty and filling food.
Rather associated with «experimental» Greek cuisine, the chef introduces modern recipes, with respect to the Greek tradition, and focus on local ingredients, which he promotes with passion. In his hands, humble dishes like spinach with rice or a pumpkin pie go to the next level. Traditional dishes like moussaka seem innovative, while baked eggplants with lentils add an unexpected surprise to every meal.
Everything started while living in USA, where Dimitris Skarmoutsos completed his studies in economics from UCLA, and continued studying in the Culinary Institute of America. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, he apprenticed to world-class chefs, learned all the secrets for international cuisines and worked for top restaurants and hotels until 2000. In 2001, he returned back to Greece to focus on Greek cuisine. His move was faced with success considering the fact that while working as a chef in «Alatsi» he won the Golden Skoufos («Toques d’or») and Gourmet awards, leading to wider recognition.
His successful television career started in 2010, with prime time shows («Master Chef» and «Junior Master Chef», «Without Recipe», «Blind Taste»), establishing him as one of the most recognizable, familiar και popular personalities in Greek gastronomy.

Lecture Abstract
From the very beginning, the Greek Revolution was never a purely local affair, for Greeks alone. In April 1821 Petrobey Mavromichalis, who had raised the standard of revolution at Kalamata, issued a call for ‘the aid of all the civilized nations of Europe’. The call was answered, from just about every corner of the European continent and even from the still-new United States of America. The ‘philhellenes’, as they soon became known, were volunteers who risked and often lost their lives fighting in a war far from home. Many more were active back in their own countries, to stimulate public awareness through the press and pressure groups, and to influence policy-makers in their governments. In the USA, as early as 1824 Congress debated whether to recognise the independence of Greece – though in the event it would be three of the most conservative regimes in the Old World that would be the first to do so, in 1830. What motivated those volunteers to risk everything, and supporters of the cause to mobilise in so many different countries? Some have suggested that the philhellenic movement in the 1820s marked the beginning of what we now call ‘humanitarian intervention’. Others have seen the volunteers as deluded idealists, adventurers, or even spies. In this talk I argue that the philhellenes were prepared to risk their lives in somebody else’s war because they believed that they, too, had a stake in the conflict. The Ottomans stood in the way of an emerging new Europe, built on classical foundations that the philhellenes saw as their own. In the end, though, it was not by winning battles that the philhellenes influenced the outcome of the conflict, but rather as the wedge in the door that forced the governments of the European powers to take a hand. The involvement of the philhellenes, right from the beginning, ensured the internationalisation of the Greek struggle – and therefore, ultimately, its outcome in the creation of the independent Greek nation-state that we know today.

About the Event
This event will be broadcast via Zoom as a commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek War for Independence and the 2,500-year anniversary of the end of the Persian Wars. Exactly 2,500 years ago, in the years 480 and 479 B.C., the Persian forces invading Greece attacked and devastated the city of Athens. The destruction of the city at that time led to many developments, including construction on the Acropolis and, eventually, the Parthenon. Memories of these events and the remnants of that devastation, and the reconstruction that followed, arguably left a permanent mark on the physical and psychological image of Greece.
