About the event
Scapes of Wrath is an exhibition of artworks presented at Deree’s AC Gallery. The Visual Arts program presents twelve artworks that were created following three months of research into different areas of environmental crisis.
Twelve advanced students in the Art Research class meticulously investigated a range of environmental issues, instructed and facilitated by Effie Halivopoulou, Artist and Head of the Visual Arts and Art History Department. The artists immersed themselves in issues of environmental crisis through a genuine desire to act through the making of art towards the improvement of the environment following the unprecedented catastrophes that struck Greece in the summer of 2023.
The students’ explorations within interdisciplinary areas of art reflect a genuine concern about climate change and environmental crisis, the dangers of biodiversity loss, the interconnectedness between all species on the planet, the mapping of floods and wildfires to indicate the current emergency status within the country, the power of citizens and the commons to reverse the deteriorating natural environment in Greece, the possibilities of creating sustainable environments for all, the dangers of environmental interventions such as wind turbine farms or, water-flow changes, the exploration of the unusual/disturbing through human acts in nature, the collective trauma that occurs when the natural environment is destroyed, the deterioration of the quality of the air we breathe. Working in liminal spaces which suggest urgency and the need to act immediately, the participants developed awareness of the immediate effects on nature of reckless human interventions.
