In the course of this seminar on child psychopathology, the basic psychiatric and psychodynamic psychoanalytic approaches, pertinent to the emergence of pathology and its manifestation in separate clinical entities, will be presented. The specific clinical symptoms of each entity, its diagnosis, as well as issues related to prevention, treatment and prognosis, will be discussed.

The theoretical presentations will be accompanied by examples derived from the clinical practice of the instructor. The level of the seminar will be equivalent to the courses of a Master’s Program in Clinical Psychology (Level 7, UK system).

Overview

This 20-hour seminar provides a firm context for the understanding of psychopathological syndromes and disorders that manifest in infancy and childhood. The order of lectures will be the following:

  1. Classification and categorization of children’s mental and psychosomatic disorders
  2. Child psychoses. Autism
  3. Children’s neuroses. Family neuroses
  4. Psychosomatic disorders
  5. Basic Function Disorders: Insomnia, Anorexia, Bowel Sphincters Disorders
  6. Child’s Depression. Family Depression
  7. Mental retardation
  8. Sensory deficits
  9. Neglect. Abuse (physical, mental, sexual)
  10. Speech disorders in the child

Who is this for?

The seminar is addressed to psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals who are working (or intend to work) with children and their families in the areas of mental health, education, social work and paediatrics or medicine. The seminar is also open to senior undergraduate and graduate psychology students.

Learning Outcomes

By attending this seminar participants will be enabled to better detect the psychological and biological factors that contribute significantly in the manifestation of psychopathological disorders and evaluate the impact of family and environmental relations and deficits, which interfere with and compromise the healthy psychosocial development of children. Finally, the participants will learn to prepare a treatment plan for a child suffering from a specific disorder and his/her family.

Athanasios Alexandridis, MD PhD

Athanasios Alexandridis is a psychiatrist, child’s psychiatrist, holds a doctorate both in Psychology and Medical science. He is a training analyst of the French (APF), Greek (HPS) and International (IPA) Pyschoanalytical Associations. He has been trained in psychosomatics in the Psychosomatic Institute IPSO- P.MARTY, PARIS. He is the author of multiple books and articles. He is the writer of the book “Child’s Psychosoma”, Gavrielides Editions, Athens, 2014 [In Greek], “Le Psychosoma Infantile” L’ Harmattan, Paris, 2017 [in French].
