Overview

The “Dealing with learning differences in the ELT classroom” seminar is an 18-hour training course designed to introduce English Language Teachers (ELTs) to the challenges that students with learning differences face and provide them with appropriate strategies to differentiate their instruction and enhance these students’ skills in the foreign language. The training involves six topic based workshops that target knowledge and skills necessary to understand, identify and deal with learning differences effectively in the classroom.

The “Dealing with learning differences in the ELT classroom” seminar is ideal for educational professionals who want to know what learning differences are, understand what they refer to and learn practical ways to identify them and deal with them effectively in the classroom.

The course will offer participants a strong theoretical and practical background regarding learning differences. It will equip participants with practical skills regarding inclusion strategies, instructional differentiation and appropriate material preparation for students that face learning challenges, in order to maximize learning opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what learning differences are and how they affect students’ performance
  • Understand the nature of dyslexia as well as other co-morbid disorders, such as Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Identify classroom behaviors that can be related to learning differences
  • Deliver engaging lessons based on inclusion practices that will help students with learning differences improve their performance.
  • Adapt materials and tests to meet the needs of individuals who face learning differences.

Despina Paizi, PhD

Despina works as an Educational Psychologist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of learning differences and she is an adjunct professor at the department of Psychology at Deree – The American College of Greece. She has extensive experience in consulting with teachers and parents concerning learning differences and the maximization of learning potential as well as language disorders in students of various ages and education levels. She is actively involved in research concerning reading difficulties and their intervention in young readers and bilingualism.

Despina has earned an MSc degree from The Edinburgh University and a PhD from the University of Rome La Sapienza.
