Heritage Greece: Apply Until April 3

The application deadline for Heritage Greece 2017 (to take place June 8-25) has been extended to April 3, 2017.

American undergraduate and graduate students of Hellenic descent are encouraged to apply now for a life-changing opportunity to reconnect with their Greek roots.

The Heritage Greece Program (HG) is a gift from the National Hellenic Society (NHS) based in Washington, DC, to accomplished Greek American college students and comprises a two-week culturally and educationally immersive experience in Greece.

Participating students will also share their experience with a peer group of exceptional students from The American College of Greece (ACG) in Athens. The HG Program’s goal is to reconnect students with their heritage, roots, language, history, and traditions. The students have a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore their culture and identity, and learn about the ancient past within the context of modern Greece.

The program was developed by NHS as part of its mission to celebrate and preserve Hellenic heritage in the United States and is hosted by The American College of Greece (ACG), which is located on a modern, safe, and beautiful 65-acre campus in the outskirts of Athens that was home to the US Olympic team during the 2004 Olympics.

The program comprises tailor-made educational and cultural activities that make for an intense, immersive experience. These activities include a one-credit language and culture course; insider’s tours of important museums; visits to beautiful locales; in depth tours of significant archaeological and historical sites; visits to religious sites and monuments of the Byzantine period; and private Greek dancing and cooking classes. They are combined with seminars, outings and activities with ACG students that offer a unique experience of Greece.

Participating students are hosted at ACG’s modern residence complex, just two blocks from campus in the Athens suburb of Aghia Paraskevi.

The Heritage Greece experience does not stop with this visit to Greece, but continues for a lifetime. The NHS will continue to play a role in the lives of Heritage Greece alumni through programs that will help them become ambassadors of our heritage, and will guide them in the development of their professional careers through the extensive and growing Heritage Greece Alumni Network.

STARTING POINT: WASHINGTON, DC

Students will meet in Washington, DC, for orientation on Thursday, June 8, 2017 and will depart for Greece as a group on Saturday, June 10, accompanied by an ACG staff member. Students bear a $1,000 portion of their airfare expense to Greece, and are also responsible for their transportation to and from Washington, DC.

Expenses including tuition, accommodation, local transportation, meals, and related costs are borne by the NHS.
