The ‘ACG Farmers’ Market’ is back!

Following our successful collaboration with the NGO ‘Boroume’ (Μπορούμε) and the ‘adoption’ of a farmers’ market in the 2018-2019 academic year, the ‘ACG Farmers’ Market’ volunteer initiative is back!

This initiative is part of the program of the NGO called ‘Boroume Sti Laiki’, where volunteers gather all surplus food from a farmers’ market and then donate it to an organization in order to fight malnutrition, while simultaneously reducing food waste. As part of this initiative, we have chosen the Holargos’ Farmers Market, which supports the philanthropic activities of Ieros Naos Faneromenis at Neo Psychiko. These activities include a daily soup kitchen and supporting the youth shelter of the church, which houses young women from rural Greece who are studying in Athens, but cannot support themselves fully.

We are happy to share that last year, from November 2018 – June 2019, we gathered over 3,500 kg of surplus fruits, vegetables, fish and eggs and offered 204 hours of service, mostly through the support of Deree students!

In the context of this initiative, every Monday, a group of 4-5 ACG members (students, faculty, and staff) will gather at the Deree Admissions Office and go together to the Holargos’ Farmers Market at the market’s closing time to gather produce, donated by vendors, from the market stands. A representative of the Ieros Naos Faneromenis is there to pick up the produce gathered by us. The initiative lasts approximately 90 minutes from start to finish (14:15 – 16:30). Transportation is provided by ACG.

Seize the opportunity to engage in volunteer community-based work and help reduce food waste while fighting malnutrition.
