Celebrating one year of the “Latsis Foundation Study Abroad Scholarships” program at ACG

Latsis Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship

Thanks to this program, Deree – The American College of Greece (ACG) students can apply for scholarships to travel and study for a semester at prestigious universities abroad.

An event celebrating the first year of the “Latsis Foundation Study Abroad Scholarships” program was held at The American College of Greece. The program, a collaboration between Deree – ACG and the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, offers Deree students the opportunity to apply for scholarships that will enable them to attend a semester or summer program at recognized universities in Europe and worldwide.

Event attendees were Deree students who enrolled in the program this past summer – taking courses at world-renowned universities such as Harvard University, London School of Economics and Political Science, Bocconi University and many more – as well as students who plan on studying abroad in the spring semester and those applying for the 2022 summer program.

In his welcoming remarks, the President of ACG, Dr. David G. Horner, said, “After months of being physically apart, I am pleased to welcome all of you up close – even behind our masks. We are proud of our students! My heartfelt congratulations to you for always pursuing opportunities that will lead to success. We are also grateful to the Latsis Foundation for supporting young people to become globally-minded citizens.”

Eva Lianou, General Manager of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, noted: “Programs such as the ‘Latsis Foundation Study Abroad Scholarships’ highlight the importance of continuously investing in the development and empowerment of our youth, aiming to build healthy and prosperous societies. Scholarships offered through Deree are not just about providing opportunities for students who could not visit foreign academic institutions and attend specialized training programs. They also give these host institutions the privilege of welcoming and collaborating with brilliant new minds. Although they have the qualifications to attend, these students do not have access to these unique opportunities because of financial constraints.”

Deree student, Smaragda Passiura, plans to study abroad at Northern Arizona University in the spring of 2022. She stated: “I come from a family of five and my parents always supported me. Yet, I never thought I could have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad in the US because of the high cost.  When the Study Abroad Office presented the ACG and Latsis Foundation scholarship opportunities at an information session, I immediately jumped at the chance to apply for it and make my dream come true. I still cannot believe that the scholarship covers 80% of the cost of studying at Northern Arizona University. I intend on keeping my promise to excel academically, enrich my knowledge, participate in extracurricular activities and proudly represent Greece.”

Dajana Memushi, an alumna of the program, talked about her experiences studying at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). “I would like to share my enthusiasm for the life-changing role Deree played in my academic journey, the highlight of which was studying abroad last summer at LSE. Thanks to the generous scholarship of the Latsis Foundation and ACG, I had the opportunity to enjoy this remarkably distinctive experience. The financial help I received allowed me to invest more in myself and reach my full potential so, in the future, I can reciprocate this support to others. Now, it is my turn to give back to my community and work on similar projects and contribute to the achievement of a more open-minded society.”
