Workshop Description

Based on Fetting’s new book, Perspectives on Substance Use, Disorders, and Addiction, this workshop provides an overview intended to orient mental health students and professionals to the ever-changing field of substance use disorders.   Emphasis will be placed on developing a deep appreciation for our ancient and natural desire for escaping reality through intoxication.  We will discuss the historical transformation of this universal desire into a pathological obsession.

Participants will be introduced to the new dislocation theory of addiction that links rising rates in addiction with globalization as well as the stresses of mastering technology.  Discussion will focus on historical, sociocultural, and family influences on the compulsive use of substances (including gambling) and how we think about them.   We will explore the Ancient Greek Symposium as a framework for learning to “tipple wisely” (Plato) or if “heavy minded” (Hippocrates), consider abstinence. Diagnostic changes in DSM-5 will be discussed and a framework of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic concepts will be presented.
