Christos Yannaras

Christos Yannaras
Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Panteion University, Athens, Greece

Christos Yannaras is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, in Athens. Born in Athens, he studied at the Universities of Athens, Bonn (Germany) and Paris (France). He holds doctorates from Paris (Sorbonne) and Thessalonica – Dr Honoris causa from Athens (Kapodistrian Univ.), New York (St Vladimir’s Seminary), Univ. of Beograd, Greek Orthodox Faculty of Theology, Boston Mass. He is author of more than twenty books that have been translated into a number of languages.

 

Panagiotis Behrakis

Panagiotis Behrakis
Pulmonologist, Intensivist MD, PhD (McGill), FCCP
Director of the Institute of Public Health, The American College of Greece

Professor Panagiotis Behrakis is a Pulmonologist-Intensivist, board certified in three specialties, Pulmonary Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. He earned his Medical Degree from the School of Medicine of Athens University, and two PHDs, from the School of Medicine of Athens University and the Department of Experimental Medicine of McGill University.

Marianna Karamanou

Marianna Karamanou
Professor of Epistemology, History & Ethics of Medicine, Medical School, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens

Marianna Karamanou, MD, PhD is a dermatologist-venereologist, Professor of Epistemology, History and Ethics of Medicine at the Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She holds a diploma in History of Medicine from the Medical School, Claude Bernard University, Lyon 1, France and a PhD in History of Medicine from the History of Medicine Department, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece. Currently she is Research Associate at the Institute of the Humanities in Medicine, University of Lausanne and Affiliated Investigator at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. Her research work covers the whole spectrum of the history of medicine and all time periods. Prof. Karamanou has a special research interest in the history of medicine of 18th, 19th and 20th century. Her research activity is reflected by publications in international peer-review journals (> 250 papers), communications and lectures in Greek and International conferences and book chapters. Part of the research scientific work has received national and international awards. Prof. Karamanou is a member of the International Academy of the History of Pharmacy, the French Society of History of Medicine and the President of the Hellenic Department of the Balkan Medical Union.

 

Gerasimos Rigatos

Gerasimos Rigatos
Pathologist – Oncologist

Gerasimos A. Rigatos has been working in hospitals for 40 years, 26 of which as Head of the Department of Internal Medicine-Oncology. He is Honorary Assistant Professor at the Medical Department of the Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has been engaged in Continuing Medical Education through his involvement in scientific societies and medical journals. Besides his scientific work he has also published substantial and significant work in the areas of History, Folklore and Culture of Medicine as well as Prose. 48 out of his 74 books are concerned with these topics. For the above he has been granted the title of Honorary President of the Hellenic Society of Medical Litterateurs. He was also honored with a scholarship by the program of Hellenic Studies of Princeton University, a first-class award by the Athens Academy, the “Markos Avgeris” Prize, the Gold Metal “Grigorios Xenopoulos”, and the “Agis Theros” award of the Hellenic Society of Litterateurs. Special editions of literary journals have been dedicated to him. A major distinction was his appointment as doctor honoris causa by the Pedagogic Department of the Kapodistrian University of Athens.
