About the event
Much of modern educational practice has developed as an adaption to a central challenge: authentic learning by doing and individualized coaching are extraordinarily resource intensive. Large classes, standardized instruction, and scalable delivery models often emerged not because they represent ideal learning conditions, but because they were practical responses to limitations of time, staffing, and cost.
Yet many of the strongest educational traditions, particularly in the arts, continue to emphasize apprenticeship, studio practice, critique, rehearsal, feedback, and one-on-one mentoring as essential elements of meaningful learning. Drawing on John Dewey’s pragmatic philosophy, this session explores how artificial intelligence (AI) may help (and perhaps hinder) educators providing experiential and inquiry-based learning.
Through examples from higher education, learning design, and dance education, we will examine how AI can support learning by doing without reducing education to automation. Instead, AI can function as a practical design instrument that expands opportunities for coaching, experimentation, reflection, and active learning in ways that were previously difficult to scale. Attendees will be invited to analyze and discuss approaches that integrate AI while preserving the relational and creative dimensions of teaching and learning. We plan to share this framework for the first half of the session and then use the rest of our time together for Q&A and open, informal discussion with participants.
About the speakers
Dr. David R. Moore, Innovative Learning Design and Technology, Patton College of Education, Ohio University, US
David R. Moore is Professor of Educational Studies at Ohio University, where he teaches courses in instructional design, computer based instruction, and the philosophy of instructional technology. Widely published in the field of instructional technology and learning design, his research focuses on computer assisted learning, simulations, instructional technology, and the ways digital environments support cognition, assessment, and learning.
Dr. Christi Camper Moore, Dance, Arts Administration, Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts, Ohio University, US
Christi Camper Moore is Associate Professor of Dance and Director of Arts Administration at Ohio University. Her research focuses on pedagogy, creativity, feedback, community building, and the ways dance training and curriculum shape student identity and learning experiences. She is the founding head of Ohio University’s Master of Arts Administration program and has published widely in dance education and arts management journals. Her work bridges arts education, experiential learning, assessment, and interdisciplinary teaching, with particular emphasis on collaboration, reflective practice, and student-centered learning.
This event is open to educators, researchers, and graduate students across disciplines.
