On March 20, 2025, ACG Sustainability Director, Rania Assariotaki, from the Office of Sustainability – Public Affairs, showcased the Boroume at the Farmers’ Market volunteer initiative, where ACG students, faculty, and staff have been reducing food waste while supporting local communities, at the CSR in Action Conference.
The impact speaks for itself. Since 2018, when our collaboration with the NGO Boroume began, ACG volunteers have contributed more than 1,500 hours of service, saving over 32 tons of food from going to waste. That’s the equivalent of 100,000 meals for people in need. Environmentally, this translates to saving 48,000 m³ of water and tons of greenhouse gas emissions. If even half of this food had been wasted, it would have released 80,000 kg of CO₂, the same amount of energy needed to power a home for 6.5 years.
“At ACG, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. I am incredibly proud of our students who dedicate their free time between classes to giving back to the community! The numbers behind food waste show that while we are all part of the problem, we can also be part of the solution. This initiative proves that small actions create lasting social and environmental impact!”, shares Ms. Assariotaki.
But this initiative goes beyond hands-on volunteering. Ms. Assariotaki emphasized that students also play an active role in raising awareness by creating promotional materials to expand the initiative’s reach and inspire their peers to get involved.
She also shared ACG’s 360° approach to sustainability on all levels, from academics to engagement, operations, planning and administration, and innovation and leadership, highlighting the “Reduce your FOODprint” campus-wide campaign.
A key annual meeting point, this year’s 13th CSR in Action Conference, organized by Boussias, brought together over 300 professionals to explore and foster critical discussions on how corporate success is measured not just in profit, but in positive impact. ACG was honored to contribute to this vital conversation, because real change starts with action!
