Το 2025 το Αμερικανικό Κολλέγιο Ελλάδος γιορτάζει τα 150 χρόνια από την ίδρυσή του στη Σμύρνη της Μικράς Ασίας. Ενάμισης αιώνας αντιξοοτήτων και δυσκολιών, αλλά και επιμονής, θάρρους, καινοτομίας και επιτευγμάτων, διαμόρφωσε το ίδρυμα σε αυτό που είναι σήμερα: Έναν μελλοντικό, ακμάζοντα εκπαιδευτικό προορισμό που μεταμορφώνει τις ζωές των φοιτητών του προς όφελος της κοινωνίας.

Για να γιορτάσουμε αυτήν τη πορεία θριάμβου και μεταφόρφωσης και για να τιμήσουμε τις απαρχές του ιδρύματος, η πολυοργανίστρια και τραγουδίστρια Ιφιγένεια Ιωάννου και το συγκρότημά της, Eivala, θα μας ταξιδέψουν μουσικά στο χρόνο με τις νοσταλγικές παραδοσιακές ελληνικές και σμυρναίικες μελωδίες τους. Η εκδήλωση έχει φιλανθρωπικό σκοπό και όλα τα έσοδα θα ενισχύσουν το ταμείο υποτροφιών της Σχολής.

Το ρεπερτόριο των Eivala έχει ως αφετηρία τη Σμύρνη, τη γενέτειρα του Αμερικανικού Κολλεγίου Ελλάδος. Η Ιφιγένεια Ιωάννου είναι γυναίκα ερμηνεύτρια και οι μαθήτριες του Κολλεγίου ήταν όλες γυναίκες για περισσότερα από 100 χρόνια. Η Σμύρνη συνέβαλε τα μέγιστα στον πολιτισμό, το εμπόριο και τις τέχνες της Ελλάδας. Η μουσική μας, από το ρεμπέτικο του Βαμβακάρη μέχρι τις μελωδίες του Τσιτσάνη, του Θεοδωράκη και του Χατζιδάκι, δεν θα ήταν η ίδια χωρίς την επιρροή αυτής της μουσικής παράδοσης.

Ομοίως, η εκπαίδευση δεν θα ήταν η ίδια χωρίς την κληρονομιά του Αμερικανικού Κολλεγίου Ελλάδος.

Σχετικά με την καλλιτέχνιδα και το συγκρότημα

Το μουσικό σχήμα Eivala είναι το τελευταίο project της πολυοργανίστριας και τραγουδίστριας Ιφιγένειας Ιωάννου, που επικεντρώνεται στην παραδοσιακή ελληνική και σμυρναίικη μουσική. Από το 2022, το συγκρότημα μπάντα περιοδεύει σε όλη την Ελλάδα.

Με καταγωγή από την Αθήνα, η Ιφιγένεια ξεκίνησε τις σπουδές της στην κλασική κιθάρα σε ηλικία 8 ετών και αποφοίτησε από το Πειραματικό Μουσικό Γυμνάσιο και Λύκειο Παλλήνης. Συνέχισε τις μουσικές της σπουδές, αποκτώντας πτυχίο Αρμονίας, πτυχίο Κιθάρας, δίπλωμα Κιθάρας με πρώτο βραβείο, πτυχίο Αντίστιξης και πτυχίο Φούγκας. Επιπλέον, είναι κάτοχος πτυχίου από το Τμήμα Λαϊκής & Παραδοσιακής Μουσικής του ΤΕΙ Ηπείρου, με ειδίκευση στο κανονάκι, καθώς και μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου σπουδών από το Τμήμα Μουσικών Σπουδών του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (με θέμα διατριβής «Ερμηνεία Ορχηστρικής & Ενορχηστρωμένης Μουσικής»).

Το 2020 ίδρυσε τη μουσική ορχήστρα «Σύνολο Σμυρναίικης και Ρεμπέτικης Μουσικής» στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο Μουσικής «Φοίβος Ανωγειανάκης». Την ίδια χρονιά, διηύθυνε ένα masterclass φωνητικής ερμηνείας με τίτλο «Rita Abatzi – Rosa Eskenazy: Μια συγκριτική μελέτη φωνητικής τεχνικής και ερμηνείας». Το masterclass αυτό παραδόθηκε διαδικτυακά το 2021 σε συνεργασία με το Greek Fringe. Το καλοκαίρι του 2022, διηύθυνε εργαστήριο με θέμα «Σμυρναίικο και ρεμπέτικο τραγούδι» στις Μουσικές Αυλές στις Ράχες Ικαρίας.

Εκτός από την ενασχόλησή της με τους Eivala, η Ιφιγένεια διδάσκει κανονάκι στο Μουσικό Σχολείο Αθηνών.

About the event

Ιn 2025 The American College of Greece is celebrating 150 years since it was founded in Smyrna, Asia Minor. A century and a half of adversity and hardship, but also of perseverance, courage, innovation and achievement, has shaped the institution into what it is today: A futureproof, thriving educational destination transforming the lives of its students for the benefit of society.

To celebrate this trajectory of triumph and transformation and to commemorate the beginnings of the institution, multi-instrumentalist and singer Ifigeneia Ioannou and her band, Eivala, will take us on a musical journey through time with their nostalgic

traditional Greek and Smyrna tunes. The event has a fundraising purpose and all proceeds will support the School’s scholarship fund.

Eivala’s repertory is anchored in Smyrna, the mother place of ACG. Ifigeneia Ioannou is a female performer and ACG’s students were all female for more than 100 years. Smyrna contributed immensely to Greece’s culture, commerce, and the arts. Our music, from Vamvakaris’ rembetiko to the melodic lines of Tsitsanis, Theodorakis, and Hadjidakis, would not be the same without the influence of this musical tradition. Similarly, education would not be the same had it not been for the legacy of The American College of Greece.

About the artist and the band

Eivala Band is the latest project of multi-instrumentalist and singer Ifigeneia Ioannou, focusing on traditional Greek and Smyrna music. Since 2022, the band has been touring around Greece.

Born in Athens, Ifigeneia began her studies in classical guitar at the age of 8 and graduated from the Experimental Music High School and Lyceum of Pallini. She continued her musical education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Harmony, a Bachelor’s degree in Guitar, a Diploma in Guitar with first prize, a Bachelor’s degree in Counterpoint, and a Bachelor’s degree in Fugue. Additionally, she holds a degree from the Department of Folk & Traditional Music at TEI of Epirus, specializing in the Kanun instrument, as well as a Master’s degree from the Department of Music Studies at the National University of Athens (with a thesis titled “Interpretation of Instrumental & Instrumental Music”).

In 2020, she established the music orchestra “Ensemble of Smyrna and Rebetiko Music” at the Greek Music Centre “Phoebus Anogeianakis.” That same year, she conducted a masterclass in vocal performance titled “Rita Abatzi – Rosa Eskenazy: A Comparative Study of Vocal Technique and Performance.” This masterclass was delivered online in 2021 in collaboration with the Greek Fringe. In the summer of 2022, she led a workshop on “Smyrna and Rebetiko Singing” at the Music Courts in Raches, Ikaria.

Currently, in addition to her work with Eivala Band, Ifigeneia teaches Kanun at the Music School of Athens.
