BSc in Computer Science

BSc (Hons) in Computer Science

Computer Science explores the principles that make computation possible and the systems that put those principles into practice. At Deree – The American College of Greece, the BSc in Computer Science places particular emphasis on mathematical reasoning, computing theory and rigorous problem-solving, while retaining the applied learning essential to today’s technology professions.

Supported by state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, the Computer Science major sets a learner-centered educational framework, which promotes critical and innovative thinking, and cultivates skills and dispositions to address the current and future challenges of a world where Computing and relevant apps are the driving forces.

The curriculum connects discrete mathematics and mathematics for computing with algorithms, complexity, theory of computation, programming languages and computer systems. Students learn not only how to build software, but also why solutions work, how efficiently they perform, and what their limitations are.

Combining analytical depth with programming, laboratory work and project-based experience, the major prepares graduates both for computing careers and for postgraduate study in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and related fields. A liberal education component further strengthens communication, critical thinking and ethical judgment.

The major has been designed by following the best international practices and following the guidelines of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) – Computer Society. It also complies with the academic standards set by QAA – Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, member of the ENQA (European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education).

What You Will Study-Curriculum

Through a curriculum that combines mathematical depth and fundamental theory combined with hands-on practice, students of the Computer Science major will:

  • Understand the science of computing. Study algorithms and complexity, theory of computation, programming languages and compilers, and the principles that explain the capabilities and limits of computer systems. This is based also on a solid mathematical foundation, developing logical, analytical and quantitative reasoning in the process.
  • Develop practical software skills. Learn programming, object-oriented and functional approaches, software engineering practices, and the design, implementation and evaluation of reliable applications.
  • Work with modern computing systems and develop a skill set for problem solving. Explore modern computing fundamentals, including computer architecture, operating systems, networks, databases and artificial intelligence through applied coursework. Combine these with the fundamental of computing, algorithms and AI to build the applications of the future.
  • Practice research and independent inquiry. Strengthen technical communication and investigative skills through research methods and a Computer Science senior project or thesis, while considering professional, legal and ethical responsibilities.

Areas for Further Exploration

Students can develop individual interests through advanced electives and project work. Examples of areas represented in the course offerings include:

  • Artificial Intelligence and intelligent systems: machine learning, cognitive computing and AI applications.
  • Data and advanced computation: data mining, big data, numerical methods and high-performance computing.
  • Systems and security: edge computing, cryptography and network security, and enabling technologies.
  • Human-centered and immersive computing: user experience, human–computer interaction and immersive technologies.
  • Interdisciplinary topics: as computing applications span the entire society, this program gives students the chance to further specialize and take courses from other disciplines (e.g. economics, management and others) by taking 4 specialization courses as part of the major. Unique to this program, this truly allows development of the applications of the future.

The duration of studies is 4 academic years. The maximum period of registration for an Open University validated award is ten years.

The definition of full time study is 60 UK credits / semester. 40 UK credits / semester or less, is considered part time.

Preparation for Postgraduate Study

Mathematical study, algorithmic analysis and computing theory equip graduates to engage with advanced material and research. Through research methods and a senior project or thesis, students can formulate questions, assess evidence and communicate technical findings. This foundation is particularly valuable for master’s degrees and, with further study, research or doctoral pathways in computing and related disciplines.

Career Opportunities

The program combines theoretical insight with practical experience in software and computing projects. Students gain comprehensive understanding of the industry’s needs in Computing and related application areas. Depending on course selection and experience, graduates may pursue roles in software engineering and development, systems programming, databases, data analysis, software quality assurance, cybersecurity or research support. More specifically jobs such as: software engineer, software developer, data analyst, artificial intelligence engineer, machine learning engineer, AI research engineer, software project manager, software consultant. Its theoretical foundations also support specialization through postgraduate study (MSc or PhD).
