ACG Submits its Fourth Annual Report on Food Waste Prevention & Reduction Practices to the National Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste

In May 2025, The American College of Greece (ACG) submitted its fourth report outlining best practices on food waste prevention and reduction to the Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste.

The Alliance is a national initiative to curb food waste, led and coordinated by the nonprofit organization Boroume in partnership with AB Vassilopoulos, operating under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Environment & Energy. It brings together public authorities, academic and research institutions, social impact organisations, and food and service businesses to address food waste across the supply chain.

Submitted annually by Alliance members, these reports feature the actions, programs, and initiatives spearheaded and implemented by the members during the previous calendar year, divided into ten best practices axes. These axes follow the food use and waste hierarchy, which prioritizes, among others, prevention of waste at the source, prevention through donation or other redistribution of surplus for human consumption, use as animal feed, and more.

In the 2024 report, ACG is featured in five categories with six impactful initiatives:

  • “Holistic Management – Holistic Approach”
  • “Awareness-Raising & Education”
  • “Research & Innovation”
  • “Food Donations
  • “Organic Waste Recycling/Composting”

These annual reports have been submitted in the context of the College’s membership in the Alliance since October 2020.

“Recognizing the environmental, financial, and social impact of food waste, at ACG, we are committed to preventing and reducing it as well as implementing sustainable practices within our operations and broader community,” notes Rania Assariotaki, Director, Office of Sustainability – Public Affairs.
