Frances Rich School of Fine and Performing Arts Naming Ceremony: An evening dedicated to the arts.

The highly anticipated Naming Ceremony of the Frances Rich School of Fine and Performing Arts, was held in the ACG Gallery on Friday, March 7, along with the opening of SelfConscious, the inaugural exhibition of Arts Festival 2014.

Students, faculty, artists, alumni and friends of the arts, gathered in the ACG Art Gallery to honor the artist Frances Rich, who has donated the largest gift ACG has ever received, to support the School of Fine and Performing Arts. As a gesture of gratitude, Frances Rich School of Fine And Performing Arts was named after the renowned artist.

President David G. Horner, in his welcoming speech, introduced the audience to the life and work of Frances Rich (1910-2007) and stated that the legacy she has left, will serve as an inspiration for generations of students to come. The importance of supporting art and making it a vital part of the university life, was also highlighted by Dr Thimios Zaharopoulos, Provost.

Mr. Dimitris Daskalopoulos, collector and founder of NEON organization, was the honorary guest who extended a greeting, stressing out the significance of art in public spaces and the need to support it with collective actions.

Sotirios Bahtsetzis, the curator of SelfConscious exhibition, talked about the exhibition's theme, on the ways technology and various new media have influenced our life. The guests walked around the gallery, interacting with multi-media artworks, while a "live" music project – the Laptop Orchestra – filled the atmosphere with contemporary notes.

Arts and education, the past and the present, students and faculty: All were brought together in a successful event that was the best way to launch the Arts Festival 2014.

The Arts Festival 2014, organized by the School of Fine and Performing Arts, will be celebrated on campus until March 28, with cultural and educational events open to the public: exhibitions, concerts, performances, as well as masterclasses and workshops offered by DEREE faculty members and invited artists and lecturers.
