Georgios Giannakopoulos
Associate Professor in Modern History
City St.George’s, University of London

About the lecture

In this lecture, Dr. Georgios Giannakopoulos explores the comparative history of the Ottoman, Habsburg, and British empires, examining the surprising durability of imperial systems during their transition into nation-states. Focusing on the end of the Ottoman Empire and the Greek-Turkish War (1919-22), he analyzes how this pivotal era highlighted the persistence of imperial political cultures, administrative practices, and geopolitical imaginaries. By situating Asia Minor within broader international transformations across Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, the session offers a fresh perspective on the historical legacies that shaped the modern world.
