As part of its Meaningful Engagement Program, Deree ACG recently organized a volunteer visit to The Smile of the Child facilities in Melissia, offering students the opportunity to engage directly with an organization whose work has a profound impact on vulnerable children and families across Greece. Widely recognized for its vital contribution to child protection and welfare, The Smile of the Child provides accommodation, psychological support, and immediate assistance to children and families in need. During the visit, participants gained valuable insight into the organization’s mission, its daily operations, and the scope of its contribution to the community.
The visit combined learning with meaningful action. Following an informative presentation by members of the organization’s team, Deree ACG students participated in a volunteer activity focused on cleaning and enhancing the outdoor areas of the Melissia accommodation facility. Approaching the task with enthusiasm, care, and a strong sense of responsibility, the group worked together to help create a more welcoming and pleasant environment for the children.
A particularly touching moment of the day came when the children living in the Melissia house returned from school and met with the student volunteers. In the spirit of Holy Week, the students offered them traditional Greek Easter candles, creating a warm and memorable moment of connection, kindness, and celebration.
The program concluded with a reflection discussion, during which participants shared their thoughts and feelings about the experience. Together, they acknowledged the power of even small acts of service and the meaningful impact they can have on children’s lives. The visit was both inspiring and impactful, reaffirming the importance of empathy, active citizenship, and community engagement at the heart of the Deree ACG experience.
Participating in the Meaningful Engagement Trip at The Smile of the Child was a truly eye-opening experience. Observing the environment and the organization’s work showed me how powerful kindness, empathy, and small acts of care can be. It’s an experience that inspired me to be more compassionate and actively contribute to making a difference.
