The American College of Greece owes a deep debt of gratitude to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA), for the continuous support that has been central to the success and sustainability of the College.
Over a 50-year period, generous grants from the United States have made possible a wide range of facilities, equipment and services used by the ACG community, including buildings, laboratories, library books, multimedia tools – such as PCs, and TV Broadcast studio equipment – in addition to a wide range of software, hardware computer equipment, and lab equipment.
USAID’s ASHA program provides assistance to schools, libraries, and medical centers outside the United States to serve as study and demonstration centers for American ideals and practices. ASHA’s grants help these institutions share with people overseas the achievements of the United States in education, training, research, and medicine, while creating a foundation for development by training future leaders in a wide variety of disciplines.
“The importance of USAID’s generous and long-standing support cannot be overstated and is emphasized in public events held on and off campus in Greece, the US and abroad, including commencement where it is mentioned as an example of the strong ties between the US and Greece and an important source of support that enables the College to offer a US-modelled education,” says ACG President David G. Horner.
The support, begun in 1962, with funding for the Aghia Paraskevi campus as it was being built, continues with recent funding for the state-of-the art buildings in use on our campus. Today, with a modern American-style campus in Athens which is unique in Greece, ACG with help from USAID-ASHA strives to update and enhance its educational offerings, so that it may continue to act as a beacon of American ideals in Greece.
The latest USAID funds in support of ACG are being used to purchase technology hardware for an ongoing and essential priority of The American College of Greece: to provide students and teachers with modern American-style teaching tools to better prepare students for a changing workforce in uncertain economic times in Greece.
As a result of USAID/ASHA funding, ACG students enjoy the latest and most effective technology including classroom lab enhancements that support new undergraduate majors at DEREE, and smart classrooms and an improved language lab that are enjoyed by both PIERCE and DEREE students.
