Deree – The American College of Greece offers gifted student-athletes the opportunity to participate in a highly developed sports program, while simultaneously receiving a high quality college education.
A) SPORT SPECIFIC ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Sport specific athletic scholarships covering 20% of tuition fees are currently awarded to promising athletes in the following sports:
- Women’s Volleyball
- Men’s Basketball
- Women’s Basketball
- Men’s Soccer
- Men’s Water Polo
- Cheerleading
This percentage can be added to any other scholarship the applicant qualifies for, provided that certain criteria are met.
Students interested in being considered for an athletic scholarship are required to participate in the tryouts organized during the first two weeks of the Fall semester. Upon completion of the evaluation process, coaches will recommend candidates for the sport-specific athletic scholarships to the Office of Athletics & Recreation and the Athletic Scholarships Committee.
A second selection period may be conducted during the Spring semester, subject to the availability of remaining scholarship openings. Tryouts for the Spring round will also take place during the first two weeks of the semester.
Student-athletes who are selected for athletic scholarships participate in a comprehensive athletic program under the guidance of experienced coaches with a successful track record of nurturing young talent. Practice sessions are held at Deree’s outstanding athletic facilities, which include:
- One (1) game court and two (2) indoor basketball/volleyball courts
- an Olympic-sized swimming pool
- a soccer field surfaced with synthetic turf and organic, environmentally friendly cork infill
- a six (6) lane track with tartan
- four (4) tennis courts
- outdoor basketball and volleyball courts
- a fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment
Eligibility requirements
Candidates for athletic scholarships must
- meet all requirements for admission to the college (for entering students)
- be evaluated by a college committee, which will assess their athletic skills and their potential for further development
- be eligible to play for the Deree teams
- attend all practices, games, tournaments and events of their team
- achieve a minimum cumulative index (CI) of 2.00 by the end of their first semester at Deree and maintain this CI while receiving the scholarship (for entering students)
- maintain a CI of 2.0 while receiving the scholarship (for continuing students)
- maintain a satisfactory disciplinary record
- be registered for at least one course (3 credits or more) per continuous semesters while receiving the scholarship
Athletic scholarships are granted for one (1) academic year and may be revoked at any time if a student fails to meet one or more of the specified requirements.
At the end of each academic year, athletic scholarships are subject to renewal through the same evaluation process.
If an athletic scholarship is revoked due to the recipient’s failure to meet any of the requirements, the total discounted amount for that academic year must be repaid in full.
B) MAJOR ATHLETIC DISTINCTION SCHOLARSHIPS
For each academic year, Deree is offering up to ten (10) “Major Athletic Distinction” scholarships, each covering 20% of tuition fees. These scholarships are open to Deree students who have achieved one or more of the following distinctions, listed in order of priority:
- Olympic Games or World Championships: 1st–6th place
- European or Panhellenic Championships: 1st–3rd place
- World, Continental, or National record: achieved during the evaluation period
- Member of the National Team: participation in an official competition/game is required
- Official competitions in Greece (in sports without a National Championship, but organized by the relevant federation): 1st–3rd place
Applications for the Deree Major Athletic Distinction Scholarships may be submitted annually between September 1 and September 20 (using the application form provided below). Each application must refer to distinctions achieved between September 1 and August 31 of the immediately preceding academic year.
Only official documentation issued by the respective Sport Federation will be accepted for evaluation.
Priority will be given to sports on the Olympic program.
Applications are confidential and will be reviewed by the Office of Athletics & Recreation and the Athletic Scholarships Committee. Candidates may be invited to an interview with committee members. The Committee’s decision is final and not subject to appeal.
The Major Athletic Distinction Scholarships are awarded for one (1) academic year.
Recipients:
- Are expected to participate in all College athletic events and teams (where applicable)
- Are encouraged to acknowledge Deree’s support in their achievements
- Should maintain a CI of 2.0 and a satisfactory disciplinary record while receiving the scholarship.
- Be registered for at least one course (3 credits or more) each continuous semester while receiving the scholarship
- Have no conduct issues
In the event that the athletic scholarship is revoked due to conduct issues, the discounted amount of the scholarship should be paid back in full.
Recipients may reapply in subsequent years, provided they maintain comparable distinctions. All applications are reconsidered annually alongside any new submissions.
