As part of ACG’s 150th anniversary celebrations, the Theatre Arts program partnered with the production company Eutopia to present Callas Reimagined. A powerful, multidisciplinary performance inspired by the life and enduring legacy of Maria Callas.
Blending biography, archival material, and imaginative narrative, the production explored the hidden dimensions of the diva’s life, where memory, myth and artistry collide. Under the direction of Yiorgos Stefanakidis, the piece wove together original text, sound design, live electronics, and video to create a haunting atmosphere that blurred time and place. The result was a theatrical experience that drew the audience into Calla’s imagined world of longing, sacrifice and artistic obsession.
Actress Evelina Arapidis led the performance with a powerful performance, shifting effortlessly between vulnerability and strength as she guided the audience through the story’s emotional shifts. Choreographer Ilias Bageorgos’s evocative movement, brought to life by five dancers, deepened the emotional landscape of the piece. Francesco Infante’s costume design added striking theatricality, especially a dramatic, voluminous skirt worn by the actress mid-performance, transforming the stage into a living portrait of Calla’s grandeur. George Vlachonikolos’s beautiful lighting design heightened the production’s visual impact, giving the stage a dreamlike pulse.
Staged in ACG’s Black Box Theatre on Saturday, May 24, to a sold-out audience, Callas Reimagined was met with strong acclaim. At once a tribute and a re-examination, the performance captured the spirit of ACG 150: honoring the past through bold creative inquiry and forward-looking collaboration.
