Efimia Anastasiou
Professor of Accounting
School of Business
When: Monday, January 25, 15:00 – 15:50
Where: DEREE Faculty Lounge
Organized by: Faculty Research Seminars 2015-16 Series
Since the mid-1980s, professional accounting bodies, employers of business graduates and academics alike have warned that universities have failed to equip business students with the competencies required for the modern business environment. Critics have suggested that educational programmes are narrow and that accounting graduates understand the technical side of accounting but lack analytical judgement and communication skills. This study examines the competencies which employers expect and perceive – with special reference to business accounting graduates – should possess (the demand side) as well as exploring students’ perceptions of the career value of their degree and learning experiences (the supply side). Following a review of the literature, the study conducted interviews with students enrolled at both public and private higher institutions and employers in the Greek market.
