The collaboration underpins ACG’s application for the establishment of a University Legal Entity (ULE), enabling Deree to operate within Greece’s recognized university sector while further strengthening its American educational model. As ACG President Ed Wingenbach, PhD, has noted, this development represents “a recognition of what most people in Greece and around the world already know”—the quality and impact of Deree’s education, research, and contribution to society.

Building on a relationship between the two institutions, the partnership reflects a shared vision: to expand access to flexible, interdisciplinary, American-style education. As RWU President Ioannis N. Miaoulis, PhD, stated in a recent discussion with President Wingenbach at the ACG Events Hall, moderated by Mary Cardaras, PhD, Director of the Demos Center, the collaboration brings together “a very similar, very compatible school, very high-quality school,” creating new opportunities to expand global reach and enrich the student experience.

Through the launch of Deree, The American University of Greece – ULE, we are expanding our academic offerings, introducing new programs and aligning curricula with the flexibility of the American model. Students will benefit from increased choice, the ability to combine disciplines, and enhanced opportunities for international mobility, including study abroad pathways with RWU.

In addition, the collaboration brings the benefit of AACSB accreditation to our business programs, further strengthening the international profile of business education across the institution. This is especially significant for Alba Graduate Business School and the School of Business and Economics, whose students will benefit from the added global recognition, academic quality standards, and professional value associated with one of the world’s leading business education accreditations.

At its core, the initiative reinforces an educational approach designed for a rapidly evolving world—one that emphasizes adaptability, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts. As President Wingenbach emphasized in the discussion, “what employers are looking for is curiosity, the ability to learn, and the capacity to solve problems in new and changing environments.”

The launch of Deree, The American University of Greece -ULE, is also expected to further strengthen Greece’s position as an international education destination. By combining a globally recognized degree with an American-style learning experience, the collaboration creates new opportunities for both Greek and international students to study in Athens while gaining credentials with global relevance.

Held in Delphi from April 22 to April 25, 2026, the Delphi Economic Forum XI marked the beginning of the Forum’s second decade under the central theme “The Shock of the New.” The 2026 agenda focused on the profound transformations shaping the global landscape, including geopolitical realignments, rapid technological advancement and artificial intelligence, climate risks, energy transition, and the evolution of sustainable and inclusive economic models. Through high-level dialogue, the Forum aimed to explore pathways toward a more resilient, innovative, and equitable future.

The annual visit to the Forum offered Deree students a valuable opportunity to attend insightful panel discussions on some of the most pressing issues of our time. Students also had the chance to meet and engage in person with distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad, representing politics, business, academia, and the media.

The student delegation was accompanied by faculty members Dr. Marilena Antoniadou, Lecturer Kyriaki Metinidou, and Dr. Panagiotis Palaios, as well as ACG administration members VP Claudia Carydis, Mr. Haris Daskalothanasis, Ms. Rania Assariotaki, and Ms. Vasiliki Christoforidou.

This year’s Forum also featured the participation of ACG President Dr. Ed Wingenbach as a speaker. Dr. Wingenbach took part in the fireside chat titled “Leading Educational Change: Assessing the Evolution of Higher Education”, in discussion with well-known journalist and ERT News Anchor Apostolos Mangiriadis. The discussion highlighted the importance of private, non-profit higher education and explored how ACG, as a leading private non-profit institution, offers high-quality, flexible, and contemporary education to Greek and international students alike.

In addition to his public session, Dr. Wingenbach also took part in a Private Working Dinner titled “What Is Education in an AI World?” The closed-door panel brought together senior leaders from academic institutions to exchange perspectives on how artificial intelligence is reshaping education globally. Panelists included Larry Kramer, President and Vice-Chancellor of the London School of Economics; Kyriakos Anastasiadis, Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; Reyhan Huseynova, Founder and Head of the Azerbaijan Future Studies Society; and Alexis Phylactopoulos, Executive Chair of the CYA Board of Trustees.

ACG’s continued participation in the Delphi Economic Forum highlights the institution’s commitment to providing students with transformative experiential learning opportunities that foster critical thinking, global awareness, and long-term career readiness.

Part of the Theodore Papalexopoulos Sustainability Dialogues—an Alba Graduate Business School initiative that promotes interdisciplinary engagement on critical sustainability challenges—the event brought together members of the ACG community and the wider public for an evening of reflection and dialogue.

The program opened with welcome remarks by ACG President Dr. Edward Wingenbach, who highlighted two major global trends: the rise of authoritarianism and the growing gap in achieving sustainability goals. He emphasized that these challenges are closely interconnected and underscored the importance of inclusive participation as a foundation for both democratic resilience and sustainable development.

Professor Bacchus, Distinguished University Professor of Global Affairs and Director of the Center for Global Economic and Environmental Opportunity at the University of Central Florida, presented key ideas from his latest book, Democracy for a Sustainable World: The Path from the Pnyx (Cambridge University Press, 2025). In his lecture, he argued that the retreat of democracy and the failure to address global sustainability challenges stem from a shared underlying issue: declining trust in institutions, governments, and public leadership.

Drawing on both historical and contemporary examples, Bacchus emphasized that effective solutions require rethinking how democratic systems function. He highlighted the importance of citizen participation in public decision-making and proposed complementing representative democracy with participatory mechanisms such as sortition—the random selection of citizens—to strengthen accountability and restore public trust. He also stressed the need to incorporate long-term perspectives, including the interests of future generations, into governance processes.

The lecture was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Professor Pavlos Vlachos, featuring Dr. Wingenbach, Professor Bacchus, and Associate Professor Effie Fokas. The discussion focused on the conditions necessary for meaningful civic participation, including the role of education, institutional design, and social trust.

Panelists noted that participation requires both opportunity and preparation. Liberal education was highlighted as a key factor in equipping individuals with the critical thinking skills and civic awareness needed to engage effectively in democratic processes. The conversation also addressed the challenges posed by polarization and misinformation, as well as the importance of fostering dialogue across different perspectives.

The role of deliberation emerged as a central theme, with particular emphasis on the value of face-to-face engagement in building trust and enabling constructive exchange. Participants discussed how creating spaces for inclusive and informed deliberation can strengthen democratic institutions and support better decision-making outcomes.

The event concluded with an open Q&A session, during which audience members engaged with the speakers on questions of representation, inclusion, and the practical implementation of participatory models. A reception followed, providing further opportunities for discussion and exchange.

Held in Athens, in close proximity to the historic Pnyx—the site of the earliest democratic assemblies—the event highlighted the continued relevance of democratic principles first developed in antiquity. It also reinforced ACG’s commitment to fostering dialogue on global challenges and to promoting active, informed citizenship.

To mark the launch of this vital alliance, an inaugural beach and underwater clean-up took place in Rafina on March 29, 2026. More than 150 volunteers participated in the coastal and deep-sea clean-up, collecting over 3,865 kg of waste, including large debris such as tree trunks and tires washed ashore. ACG volunteers, including the ACG Sustainability Leaders, the Deree Economics Society, the Management Society, the Accounting & Finance Society, several international students, and Pierce IB 1 students, participated alongside citizens and representatives of various organizations, echoing a strong message about the power of collective action in protecting the environment.

“Participating in the beach clean-up reminded us that sustainability is not an abstract concept, but a series of small, collective actions. As economists, we often analyze incentives and outcomes. This was a clear example of how individual responsibility translates into meaningful collective impact. Initiatives like this strengthen both environmental awareness and community engagement”, mentioned the Deree Economics Society.

The program is rooted in a four-pillar foundation—Education, Environment, Technology, and Society— each closely interconnected with ACG’s mission, values, and 360° sustainability strategy. Through this approach, ACG advances quality education in alignment with SDG 4, fosters a culture of service, and empowers the next generation of leaders to become responsible citizens and professionals, creating a positive ripple effect toward a more sustainable society.

“As an educational institution, we see sustainability not only as a responsibility but also as an opportunity to educate, engage, and empower our community. Through the Ocean Stewards Program, we aim to connect learning with action—building awareness, strengthening environmental literacy, and encouraging active participation in protecting our oceans,” shared Ms. Rania Assariotaki, Director of Sustainability, Office of Sustainability – Public Affairs.

The initiative was operationally supported by MEPP Environmental’s experienced team of free divers, who played a key role in retrieving waste from the seabed. The Volunteer Firefighters of Provalinthos also contributed significantly to the effort. Additional support was provided by organizations including InCommon, KDAP Vrilission “O Krikos,” the CLC Institute, and the Global Shapers Athens Hub.

Distinguished supporters joined the effort, including H.E. Mrs. Alison Duncan, Australian Ambassador to Greece; Mrs. Dimitra Tseva-Mila, Mayor of Rafina-Pikermi; and Mr. Giorgos Tsakalakis, Country Manager of Bolton Hellas.

This inaugural initiative was made possible through the generous support of Bolton Hellas – Rio Mare.

While the beach clean-up marked the official launch of the Ocean Stewards Program, it builds on momentum established earlier in the month during the annual Deree Business Week (March 17–20). In collaboration with the Deree Maritime Society, the program hosted a panel discussion featuring executives from Bolton Hellas, Motor Oil, New Naval, and Vechro Paints. The discussion explored how the convergence of technology, science, and social impact can drive practical solutions for ocean sustainability.

The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR) serves as the program’s Scientific Academic Partner, ensuring that all environmental interventions are grounded in data, scientific research, and best practices.

Demonstrating how even a simple 30-minute act can make a profound difference, 71 volunteers donated blood in support of Aretaieio and NIMTS Hospitals, Aimodosia 365, and the Hellenic Red Cross.

The initiative was organized by ACG Health & Wellness, the Office of Sustainability–Public Affairs, and the Office of Student Affairs, with the support of the ACG Sustainability Leaders.

In addition to donating blood, participants had the opportunity to learn more about bone marrow donation and explore whether they could become potential matches—broadening the impact of their participation even further.

As one of ACG’s longstanding volunteer initiatives, the biannual blood drives reflect the College’s enduring commitment to care, service, and community engagement.

Meet April’s Sustainability Face: Isavela Serafeimidou

Isavela Serafeimidou is an Undergraduate International Tourism & Hospitality Management (ITHM) student, Secretary of the ITHM Society, and Assistant in the RIGS Office at The American College of Greece (ACG).

She actively incorporates sustainability into both her academic and personal life. On campus, Isavela integrates simple yet impactful habits into her daily routine, such as using ACG’s water fountains to refill her reusable bottle, taking digital notes instead of using paper, and making use of recycling bins to reduce waste.

Through her role as an orientation coordinator, she also plays an active part in introducing new students to ACG’s sustainability initiatives, helping raise awareness and encouraging environmentally responsible behaviors from the very beginning of their journey at ACG.

Beyond campus, Isavela maintains the same conscious approach. She chooses sustainable transportation options such as walking or public transit, minimizes waste by reusing items and separating recyclables, conserves energy and water, and makes mindful and environmentally-friendly purchasing decisions. Her everyday choices reflect a commitment to living more sustainably through small, consistent actions.

Through her involvement on campus and her everyday lifestyle choices, Isavela demonstrates how individual actions can contribute to a broader culture of sustainability within the ACG community.
