Students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, partners, and friends participated in ACG’s biannual three-day Blood Drive in support of NIMTS & Agios Savvas Hospitals, the Hellenic Red Cross and AURORA, an organization aiding patients with hematological diseases since 2018.

Over the course of three days, we welcomed 139 volunteers who registered to donate at the Deree Student Lounge, ACG Campus. Following the required pre-donation health screening, 114 successfully donated blood.

In collaboration with the Hellenic Red Cross, the event also provided an opportunity to learn more about the importance of bone marrow donation. Interested volunteers gave saliva samples to determine whether they could be potential matches.

The initiative was organized by ACG Health & Wellness, the Office of Sustainability-Public Affairs, and the Office of Student Affairs, with support from the ACG Sustainability Leaders and the Deree Student Association (DSA).

Recognized across two product categories – Computers & Displays and Imaging Equipment – ACG joins organizations from the educational, healthcare, nonprofit, finance, and government sectors in excellence in the sustainable procurement of technology.

The EPEAT Purchaser Awards recognize institutions that prioritize EPEAT-registered products through their purchasing policies and practices. Managed by GEC, a non-profit organization, the EPEAT eco-label helps organizations to efficiently address the environmental and social impacts of electronics, such as computers, printers, servers, etc., throughout their lifecycle.

At ACG, EPEAT requirements are incorporated in purchasing contracts, helping ensure that vendors only provide electronics that meet strict sustainability criteria. Compared with products that do not meet these criteria, EPEAT-registered electronics are more energy-efficient, contain fewer hazardous substances, are designed to last longer, and are easier to recycle. What is more, EPEAT criteria also address labor and human rights considerations across the supply chain.

In 2025, ACG purchased 322 such products, generating measurable financial and environmental benefits, including estimated savings of US$7,739, also saving enough energy to power 13 average U.S. households for a year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking six average U.S. passenger cars off the road for one year.

The infographic below, provided by GEC, presents the full impact of last year’s electronics purchases.

“ACG’s fourth consecutive EPEAT Purchase Award demonstrates that sustainable procurement is not a one-time achievement, but a continuing institutional commitment. Every purchasing decision gives us an opportunity to reduce environmental impact and support a more responsible electronics industry. I was especially honored to contribute to the Global Electronics Council committee involved in developing EPEAT sustainability criteria for refurbished notebooks, helping bring the perspective of higher education into an important international standard-setting process”, shared Rania Assariotaki, ACG Sustainability Director, Office of Sustainability – Public Affairs.

Organized by ACG’s Institute for Hellenic Culture and the Liberal Arts (IHCLA), the event, titled Challenges of Love, was held as part of the S. Sue Horner Lectureship in Gender Studies & Religion, established in memory of Dr. S. Sue Horner, an accomplished scholar and dedicated advocate for women’s equity and access to education.

The evening opened with welcome remarks by ACG President Ed Wingenbach, followed by an introduction from Professor Haris Vlavianos, Chief Consultant and Head of the Advisory Board of IHCLA. Professor Vlavianos introduced de Botton’s contributions to literature and philosophy, highlighting his acclaimed works on love, relationships, and the human condition. He also discussed how de Botton has brought these ideas to a wider audience through The School of Life, an educational organization he founded in London in 2008 to make philosophy and psychology more accessible to everyday life.

Taking the stage, de Botton challenged conventional ideas about romance, exploring how our earliest experiences shape our emotional expectations and why even our closest relationships can be a source of misunderstanding. With his characteristic wit and insightful observations, he drew on philosophy, psychology, and everyday life to offer a candid perspective on human connection, emphasizing the importance of empathy, self-awareness, and accepting imperfection.

The lecture was followed by an engaging discussion with Professor Vlavianos, whose exchange with de Botton expanded on the evening’s central themes. The floor then opened to questions from the audience, adding an interactive dimension to the conversation and allowing for further exploration of the ideas presented. The evening embodied the spirit of the S. Sue Horner Lectureship and ACG’s commitment to bringing distinguished international voices into dialogue with its community and the wider public, encouraging meaningful conversations that extend beyond the classroom.
