History and Memory

Muslims leave Greece 1923

Exciting lectures, interesting points, images that evoke strong emotions. The one-day conference on the Asia Minor refugee experience had it all and the interest displayed by the ACG community proves once again that the population exchange is a historical event that continues to move us. The conference was held on March 27 and organized by Alexander Kitroeff, associate professor of History at Haverford College who is the current holder of the Venizelos Chair at DEREE.

The image is from Maria Iliou's (PIERCE 78) documentary "Expulsion and Exchange of Populations (Turkey-Greece 1922-1924)" which drew large crowds at the Benaki Museum and was screened at the closing of the conference

Powerful Bond

For over half a century the American Women's Organization of Greece (AWOG) and ACG have worked together for the benefit of education.

The affinity of the two institutions was once again underlined when AWOG chose DEREE to host its general assembly in March. President Horner presented AWOG President Silva Gitsas-Pourliakas with an honorary certificate and Ioulia Tomara,

a junior majoring in Marketing at DEREE, was honored with the 2011-12 AWOG Award

for academic achievement. Read more
