My grandfather is from the horio of Vasilakion just south of Sparti, where the donkey I was aptly named after lives (just kidding, like every other good, first-born Greek boy I was named after my grandfather). I grew up in the very stereotypical Greek fashion, which obviously meant Greek school on Saturdays and the reciting of poems and kalanta at the annual Christmas pageant. I had my first taste of Greek coffee by the age of three and by five I was recruited to tying the ribbons of baggies for the individual portions of baklava my Yiayia made for the customers of my family’s fitness centers (we are talking by the thousands). Besides playing basketball with my GOYA friends, I was coerced into Greek dancing lessons with the girls (three cousins and three sisters).
