This seminar is a study on Phenomenology and Daseinsanalysis. The course focuses on the key elements of phenomenological psychotherapy and how these elements are exemplified in understanding human existence as Dasein, psychopathology, and psychotherapy.

Special emphasis is placed on how Heideggerian Phenomenology understands the Human Being and how this is influencing the Psychotherapeutic practice.

Who is this for?

This seminar is addressed to health professionals (Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Psychiatric Nurses etc.) and graduate and undergraduate students of psychology.

Why attend?

By using both didactic and experiential learning modes, this program is designed to help participants to acquire the philosophical, theoretical, and experiential knowledge of the basic principles of Daseinsanalysis and develop the psychotherapeutic stance in their practice as well as to grow both personally and professionally. During each session clinical examples will be presented and discussed with the participants. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of the historical and philosophical influences on the development of phenomenological – existential therapy (Daseinsanalysis).
  • Have an understanding of the theoretical foundation and language of Daseinsanalysis.
  • Identify the major similarities and differences between Daseinsanalysis and other modalities of Psychotherapy.
  • Participants will gain an understanding on diversity issues from the perspective of Phenomenological Analysis (Daseinsanalysis).
  • Participants will be able to conceptualize cases from a Daseinsanalytical perspective.


  • Philosophies of existentialism/existential psychotherapy
  • What is phenomenology
  • What is hermeneutics and what is hermeneutic phenomenology?
  • The concept of Dasein-later Heidegger
  • Binswanger-Boss-Laing
  • The phenomenology of Merleau Ponty
  • Comparison of phenomenological-existential approaches with other psychoanalytic approaches (2 seminars)
  • Comparison of phenomenological-existential approaches with pre-Socratic thought and Far Eastern wisdom
  • Application of phenomenology to everyday practices (e.g., architecture, arts, dance, sports, etc.)

Thanos Papageorgiou, Ph.D.

Dr. Papageorgiou graduated from the Medical School of Athens in 1988. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at Evangelismos and PsNA hospitals and Neurology at 401. He has been in personal analysis with Kostas Gemenetzis for many years and he has been one of the founders of the Hellenic Society for Phenomenological-Existential Analysis and Psychotherapy. He has been the president for three years and he is currently a member of the training committee. He has more than 30 years clinical experience working as a Daseinsanalyst in his private office.
