Spring Seminar 2016

The Institute of Diplomacy & Global Affairs announces the commencement of an 8-hour seminar, delivered by Institute Director Andreas Andrianopoulos.

The seminar will take place every Wednesday from March 2 to March 23, 2016 (Mar 2, Mar 9, Mar 16, Mar 23) 18:00-20:00 at the Institute of Diplomacy & Global Affairs’ building in Plaka, 17B Ipitou Str.

China, Russia and Islam: Challenges to World Order

New developments have shattered the new world order architecture. Russia and China have presented new political governance paradigms undermining the hitherto dominance of the western liberal democracy model.

The Chinese market socialism alternative poses a substantial threat to the domination of liberal free markets. Likewise, the Russian ‘disciplined democracy’ paradigm paves the way for many authoritarian regimes all over the world for a possible viable political alternative. Discussion and analysis of these models exemplifies their strengths and weaknesses as well as their desirability to be adopted or no by developing countries and economies.

The emergence also of radical Islam displays the precariousness of the present theoretical stability of world affairs. What is the essence of this new challenge? Is it a threat to world peace or a possible way out for underdeveloped societies and suppressed massive egos? What are the Sunny and Shia sects of Islam, how do they rival each other and to what extent they threaten the future prospects of this religion as well as the possibility for peace in world affairs?
