Overview
Business German involves a series of workshops on specific business language topics that aim to prepare participants for everyday working life. While reviewing some points of German grammar, the course mainly introduces participants to the appropriate terminology for a range of situations that deal with work-related topics, such as team meetings, job requirements and descriptions, job applications, business transactions etc. Oral practice in class will be combined with various written tasks to enable participants to produce a variety of mainly business-oriented correspondence. Reading and listening skills for the workplace will also be practiced, and offer thus to participants a well-rounded preparation for active work in the field.
Who is this course for?
At the B1 level (Goethe Zertifikat B1, B1 in CEFR), this course is designed for participants at the (low) intermediate level who wish to prepare for the world of business with its specific vocabulary and expressions aiming for efficient and rapid learning outcomes attained through active speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Why Attend?
Business German is built to develop and enhance the participants’ knowledge of German for the workplace. Participants gain a wider knowledge of specific business language topics as well as practice linguistic strategies at work, as well as a better understanding of the German language and culture. After this course, participants are equipped with the necessary linguistic tools to effectively respond to a number of everyday situations in working life.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to communicate in a range of situations in the professional domain and use the target language in order to:
- actively participate in meetings, conversations and interviews;
- to effectively communicate in formal and informal correspondence, phone calls, messages and instructions, as well as short passages from descriptive texts and narratives
- participate in simple formal and semi-formal conversations and deliver short and clear presentations describing trends and numbers;
- produce different types of written texts and reports, such as formal and informal e-mails, messages, instructions, short narratives and descriptions
- practice communicative language skills and thrive in working environments
- build strong relationships with colleagues and clients and contribute to a positive customer experience

Certificate of Participation
In order to be awarded the Certificate of Participation from the Deree – School of Graduate and Professional Education, you will need to attend 70% of the course (7 sessions), and complete 7 of the 10 required online tasks.
Duration
The course runs for 10 consecutive weeks and consists of a 2.5-hour workshop per week (25 contact hours in total).

Meet our Dedicated Trainers
Maria Kyriakaki, MA., Ph.D.
Dr. Maria Kyriakaki is a Linguistics Full-time Professor at Deree – The American College of Greece and is currently teaching Academic Writing, Linguistics, Business German, General German and Greek. She holds a MA and a Ph.D. Degree in Linguistics from the University of Toronto, Canada, and a Ptychion from German Language and Literature, School of Philosophy, University of Athens. Dr. Kyriakaki has lived and taught in Canada as a Lecturer at the University of Toronto and McMaster’s University. She has delivered presentations in various Universities, including Berkeley University, University of Stuttgart and Leipzig University. Also, she has published work in journals and has recently published a chapter in a book of Oxford University Press. Dr. Kyriakaki also holds an EOPPEP licensing certificate on Adult Education in Greece (2014) and has been teaching English, German and Greek of various levels to adult learners for many years. She finds teaching an inspiration and her motivation lies in increasing students’ potential and real interest in languages.
