Overview

This course will deal with the most important aspects of Audiovisual Translation and will show participants the process of preparing a series or a movie to be shown in cinemas or aired in streaming platforms, like Netflix, Disney and Amazon, for multiple audiences across the globe.

Who is this course for?

The course is for people who would like to add to their qualifications and find a job in the industry in Greece and abroad, using it either as an extra income or their main occupation.

The introduction of streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and most recently Disney+, has created the need for subtitlers who work on numerous productions for each company. The subtitlers work for vendors in the US, UK, and India mainly and those vendors deal with the majority of projects from each platform. Each vendor needs many translators to cover the translation of large studio and platform projects and they are constantly hiring. Therefore, the participants in this course will have the opportunity to apply for positions with the help of the instructor.

Entrance requirements: Participants will need to have a very good command of both English and Greek and good computer skills. A personal laptop is required for all sessions.

Why Attend?

This course/seminar will touch upon every aspect of the particular industry and will be based on hands on practice that will accompany theoretical aspects of AV Translation. More specifically, the participants will be taught how to translate and do the quality assessment of comedy/humor, documentaries, series with terminology such as medical or legal, subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and audio description for the blind. They will also learn the theoretical background of each task and the technical specifications, as requested by the platforms and studios, with the aim to successfully complete and deliver a project. All tasks will be lab based with the supervision of the instructor and participants will have the opportunity to complete them in real time in an attempt to simulate professional conditions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. translate and proofread AV projects
  2. realize the particularities of the field (technical specifications and procedures, steps until the completion of a task)
  3. improve their discipline and time management by completing exercises at home
  4. broaden their knowledge on AV translation by learning the theory behind practice
  5. deal with translation difficulties in different genres, such as comedy, drama, documentary, among others, and offer solutions that will accommodate the viewers, and
  6. understand the categories of quality assessment, as requested by the industry itself

Vasilis Manousakis, Ph.D.

Vasilis Manousakis holds degrees from the University of Athens (Ph.D., B.A.), Newcastle upon Tyne University (M.A.), and Hellenic American University (MSc.). Dr. Manousakis has extensive international experience in higher education and seminar teaching in the U.S., UK, Cyprus and Greece. He is the author of four books, and over one hundred journal and scholarly articles, translations, short stories and poems. He holds professional Mental Health Counseling experience and has over 1,500 supervised hours of total counseling time with individual clients and groups. He practices AV Translation and has worked for the most important studios (Universal, Warner) and platforms (Netflix, Disney, Amazon) and has vast theoretical knowledge of the field, as well as its market needs.
