DEREE scholarship recipient Konstantina Ermilios, winner of the 2013-2014 AWOG award, and ACG Executive Director of Development Mary-Irene Triantafillou met with members of the American Women’s Organization of Greece (AWOG) on April 10.

The AWOG award helps promising students reach their educational goals, and The American College of Greece is very grateful for all the support it has received over the years from AWOG.

Also at the luncheon meeting were Grand President of the Daughters of Penelope Joanne Saltas and Executive Director Elena Skardis Saviolakis (DEREE ’04) who were visiting from the US.

AWOG board and members – including representatives from the Federation of American Women’s Clubs (FAWCO) – also renewed their support for the award for the 2014-2015 academic year.

AWOG’s support of ACG scholarships dates back to the early days of the school as evidenced in Lilian Mansfield’s book The History of PIERCE College, Athens, Greece 1978-1979:

“…In 1952… all agreed to help and soon food from CARE, clothing and blankets from the World Council of Churches, school supplies from Save the Children were on their way transported by army trucks. Later, aid was supplied by AWOG, the Brethern Service Commission, and the Extension Service of the Agricultural Division of FAO.”

“… To meet the need for workers to help solve the huge welfare problems of Greece, a special six-week intensive training program for forty child welfare workers was instituted in 1951, in cooperation with the Ministry of Welfare and ECA. Scholarship aid was given by AWOG, the American Woman’s Organization of Greece.
