Renowned Greek actress Maya Liberopoulou (PIERCE ’57) and the Melina Mercouri theatrical award committee she heads have awarded the Melina Mercouri prize to Youlika Skafida for both of her performances at the National Theatre of Greece during the last theatrical cycle.

Ms Skafida was proclaimed best young female actor in the latest theatrical cycle by the committee in early March for her portrayal of Hazel Niles in Eugene O’Neill’s Mourning becomes Electra, directed by Yannis Houvardas – who also adapted and condensed the expansive material of the trilogy into a single play – as well as for her performance in Orpheus Descending by Tennessee Williams, directed by Barbara Weber, where she played Carol Cutrere.

The annual award bestowed by the Melina Mercouri Foundation  – named after the late actress – goes to the best young female actress in the last theatrical cycle, and consists of the Melina Mercouri pin – which will be passed on to the next award recipient next year – and 3,000 euros.
