Generous Donation: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholarship Program at DEREE

The American College of Greece (ACG) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholarship Program. Made possible by an exclusive grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the program will support high academic performing, Greek public university students who are accepted into the ACG – DEREE Parallel Studies program.

“We are grateful to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for this generous grant that will allow us to serve larger numbers of talented and deserving Parallel Study students who seek exposure to a US-modeled education and all the benefits that come with it,” said ACG President Dr David G Horner.

John Zervakis, Chief Operating Officer of the SNF office in Athens, stated “The grant to DEREE is part of the Foundation’s ‘Recharging the Youth’ initiative, which aims to help create new opportunities for Greece’s younger generations. The scholarship program will provide academically qualified students, lacking the financial means, the opportunity to further their studies at a first rate institution.”

The Parallel Studies Program at ACG offers students a unique opportunity to enroll in US-accredited and EU-validated programs at DEREE, while concurrently pursuing a Greek state university degree. With the SNF grant, this successful program will be expanded and enhanced resulting in more students broadening their educational experience and equipping themselves with tools to launch meaningful careers.

ACG has a long history of enrolling “parallel study students”; presently, 198 such students are enrolled, with 60 of these newly enrolled in spring 2014 with an average high school GPA of 17.8.

ACG – DEREE has committed significant funding ($20.5 million over four years) to merit and need-based financial aid primarily for Greek students, whose families are suffering the brunt of the economic crisis. SNF scholars will also be able to participate in DEREE’s highly successful International Internship and Study Abroad Program.
