Workshop Description

Messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger, Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, etc. have already outgrown social networks having hundreds of millions of monthly active users. In these apps, people communicate mostly by chatting, i.e., talking to each other by writing messages directly on their smartphone or on a web-based version of the messaging app. Many messaging apps have already opened their platform to developers to build chatbots, which are computer programs that chat with people either for fun and leisure, or for handling a specific need such as finding information or buying a desired good. This emerging trend opens up opportunities for using chatbots as a novel communication technique.
The first part of the master class will present case examples of use, and introduce basic principles for designing chatbots, going over Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Storytelling. For the second part, a hands-on workshop will take place and participants will be instructed on how to build a simple chatbot as “live marketing communication material” for a commercial company.
