The remarkable success of The Junior College has spawned a number of challenges. These challenges pertain, for the most part, to the goal of achieving an optimal relationship between The Junior College and Deree College, especially considering that 96% of Junior College graduates transfer to Deree to complete their bachelor's degrees. Junior College students see Deree College as a logical next step in their cultural, social and professional development.
To enable the comprehensive planning process, obtain the operational integration of the two divisions, and still maintain the distinctive aims of The Junior College, the following actions and policy revisions have been implemented:
- Equalizing the academic level of the two divisions by using the same rigorous well-established curricula, the same database of courses, and the same academic regulations;
- Rotating the faculty and other teaching staff between both divisions; effective 1999, both divisions now share the same faculty;
- Using the same evaluative criteria and requiring common final examinations in all multisectional courses at both campuses and divisions of the College;
- Publicizing The Junior College more effectively by including it in the annual College Catalog, effective 2000-2001;
- Extending the purview of the Committee on Academic Standards and Policies (CASP) to encompass The Junior College;
- Integrating the advising system of The Junior College with that of Deree;
- Establishing a writing center at the Downtown campus patterned after the one at the Aghia Paraskevi campus;
- Making the short orientation session, which incoming students attend before classes, a one-hour semester course to help students adjust to college life;
- Organizing a special orientation for Junior College transfer students to Deree (effective Spring 2001);
- Allowing Junior College students to participate in the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Program of the College;
- Allowing Junior College students not only to organize their own activities but also to participate in all Deree student activities, clubs, societies, and athletic events;
- Integrating Junior College academic administration with that of Deree College; the dean of Faculty is now responsible for instructors assigned to teach at The Junior College, for the curricula and for the course offerings;
- Making the Director of the Downtown Deree Program also the Director of The Junior College, effective Fall 2000.
