First-Ever Symposium to Showcase DEREE Student Talent

In what promises to be an exciting and unprecedented celebration of the DEREE-American College of Greece community, The First Annual Student Research and Creative Arts Symposium will be taking place May 27-29, showcasing the multifaceted, innovative, brilliant and creative work of students across all disciplines, and the dedication of faculty to their students.

“We have many wonderfully intelligent and creative students at DEREE, who work very hard to contribute to the body of knowledge and to the cultural environment of our institution,” says DEREE Provost Dr. Thimios Zaharopoulos, who came up with the idea of a year-end symposium, featuring a large and varied synthesis of presentations to reflect the outstanding abilities of DEREE students and the dedication of their supervisors – faculty who steered them towards actualizing their ideas.

The presentations will differ in “terms of format, subject matter and medium,” says Dr. Zaharopoulos, noting, however that “they all have in common the student and faculty dedication to their discipline.”

DEREE students have created projects negotiating multi-disciplinary topics as well as topics from literature, philosophy, psychology, the arts, information technology and business and will present these throughout the Ag. Paraskevi campus during the three-day Symposium.

The offerings are varied and open to all: music and drama performances, oral presentations, video and art installations, even an electronic game and a board game, poster presentations, documentaries, web design, photography, drawings, and multimedia projects, among many others.

“I believe it is an incredible opportunity for students to present their creations to the world, thus getting firsthand experience to taste the fruits of their labors,” says Stelios Michopoulos, a sophomore honors student, majoring in Psychology, who is presenting an “anti-fairy tale” short story-performance The Beauty and the Beast Show “that deals with the role of fate in a Fairy Tale,” and which he presented as his creative project for his honors class Fairy Tales Formed and Transformed, taught by Dr. Anastasia Logotheti.

His project will be on display on the second day of the Symposium (Thursday, May 28) as part of the International Honors Program Creative Projects Exhibit, at the DEREE Art Gallery, 12:00 – 15:00, which will showcase another 54 creative projects.

Dr. Logotheti, who is an Associate Professor in DEREE’s English Department and Director of the Teaching & Learning Centre, also volunteered to be part of the organizing 11-member Faculty Symposium Committee, tasked with facilitating faculty to bring students and their work to the Symposium.

“The faculty team I worked with was responsible for the posters at the Symposium, and it was pleasing to see that even this first year we have nearly 30 posters representing work in a variety of courses and majors,” says Dr. Logotheti, adding “It is a new and exciting possibility our students are now offered… This three-day event will be a very illuminating experience for all students, as they will realize that the work they do in the classroom is part of an ongoing academic debate. A college education allows them to enter this dialogue using the knowledge they have gained through their education.”

Dr. Logotheti also sees the Symposium as “an opportunity for faculty to show the quality of work we assess and to demonstrate our commitment to mentoring our students to excellence.”

“It is our first attempt and we will learn through the experience in order to be able to improve it next year,” concludes Dr. Zaharopoulos, who encourages all members of the ACG Community to attend as many events as possible.

The First Annual Student Research and Creative Arts Symposium will include a keynote speech by Evgenia V. Cherkasova, PhD, an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department of Suffolk University in Boston, who will speak on “Open Dynamic Educational Project (ODEP): An Interactive Multimedia Model for Teaching and Learning in the Humanities,” on Wednesday, May 27, 14:30-15:30 at the Center for the Arts Auditorium.

Join us at the Symposium, an unprecedented opportunity for the ACG community to recognize the exemplary work and outstanding achievements of our students and faculty over the last academic year, taking place May 27-29 throughout campus.

All participating students will receive a certificate of recognition.
