English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP)

The English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP) equips students with the academic language skills necessary for successful college studies in all disciplines while giving them access to degree programs. EAPP courses focus on the type of English students encounter in an academic context. These courses introduce them to the culture of an academic community and help them develop the skills required to meet the expectations of college courses. Students not only improve their competence in English for academic purposes, but they also become familiar with the methods of college-level study and acquire appropriate skills by

  • using language clearly and accurately
  • writing in an academic style
  • delivering presentations
  • working in groups
  • developing analytical skills

Students receive intensive English training in the classroom as well as recommended academic support outside the classroom through the Student Academic Support Services program.

Placement Test

Applicants who, upon applying for admission to the College, do not provide evidence of proficiency in English will need to register for the College’s placement test. The placement test determines students’ fluency in English in order to place them in a course that meets their needs. The College uses the Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT), which measures test takers’ English language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For an interactive demonstration of the Oxford Online Placement Test, visit www.oxfordenglishtesting.com. The test is free of charge.
